Messages Read in Mobile Client Need to Remain Available to Desktop Viewer
Jennifer Boyle
I had to choose one category, so I chose direct messages because they are the most important to address regarding this issue, but it applies to nearby chat and group chat, too. As the mobile viewer improves, I foresee that a major impediment to my using it regularly will be that my messages are apparently not logged and are permanently lost if I read them on mobile. That is a deal breaker for me. I really, really don't want my messages going into a black hole, or even ending up in fragmented log files on multiple devices.
It is very important to me to log my messages, and to log them all in one place. For many years, I have kept my log files on a flash drive that I move to any computer that I use to access SL.
I don't know that best way to address this problem. One way might be to have the mobile client log messages the same way the desktop client does and just keep the log files in the cloud on some service like Google Drive, Apple iCloud, or Microsoft OneDrive. Another way would be to have an optional user setting that causes the server not mark the messages as read when they are read in the mobile viewer so that they still are treated as new when the account logs on using a desktop viewer. There are probably others ways that more knowledgeable people can think of.

Mobile Viewer IM Retention Function
Kei Lyric
I would like to be able to retain and view instant messages received while logged into the mobile viewer as chat history when I log in on my PC.

Chat logs are stored locally so will be on your phone OR pc but not both. It is a viewer side thing you can choose to activate or not. They are not held by LL.

I can only say, this is an option, the mobile viewer need urgently.
Send group-notices are gone without any chance of reaction ... messages by people are ending somewhere ...
An option in the setting to choose between "get" messages ...
... or appear "as like a ghost" and get nothing send to you until you log in on an other viewer ... or start interacting with a person.
That would be awesome.

Since posting the above, I have learned more. Apparently, if I have notifications turned on for IMs on the mobile device, IMs received when I am not online appear as notifications and then forever disappear even if I don't see them. Once I understood that, I turned off notifications even though now I won't get any more payments from Payday Linden.

Some viewers are keeping 'ghost copies' of messages in a channel to provide context (such as group chats, or DM's), basically by reading the clientside logs from previous sessions. If LL could implement some kind of log spool server-side, then connecting with different viewers or different systems will still allow access to those old spooled transcripts. It wouldn't be a complete solution, but would help.
