Dear Linden Lab,
I recently tried using the mobile version of Second Life, and I wanted to share some feedback from the perspective of someone who has experience using the desktop viewer. I appreciate the effort to bring Second Life to mobile devices, because it could make the platform more accessible and allow people to stay connected with friends when they are away from their computers. However, after testing it on a tablet, I found the current interface and movement system difficult to use. I hope the following suggestions might help improve the experience.
The most important improvement would be movement. On a touch device, the current joystick-style movement feels overly sensitive, unpleasant and makes it difficult to control the avatar precisely. A better solution might be a point-and-click movement system, similar to games like Diablo. With this approach, a user would simply tap where they want their avatar to go, and the avatar would walk to that location automatically. This type of movement tends to feel much more natural on touchscreens and would make navigating the world far easier.
It would also help if the camera were largely fixed behind the avatar by default. On mobile devices it is easy to lose orientation, and a camera that automatically stays behind the avatar would keep the experience clear and stable. At the same time, users should still have the option to control the camera when they want to. For example, pinch gestures could handle zooming in and out, and a dedicated camera button could allow more advanced camera movement when held down—similar to how the Alt key works in the desktop viewer.
Another suggestion concerns the interface icons. Since the mobile viewer is intentionally simplified, the icons should focus on the tools that mobile users actually need. For example, an easy way to access a curated mobile inventory would be very useful. Many residents might prefer to select a small set of items on their desktop viewer that are specifically available on mobile. That way, the mobile app remains lightweight while still allowing users to access the most relevant clothing, gestures, or objects they want when away from their computer.
Finally, the mobile viewer should include basic default animations so that avatars always appear natural even when custom animation overrides are not running. At minimum, it would help to have a simple default walk, sit, and lie animation so that avatars do not appear stuck in a single pose when interacting with objects or furniture.
I understand that the mobile viewer is a simplified version of Second Life and is not intended to replace the full desktop experience. However, with improvements to movement, camera behavior, interface priorities, and basic animations, it could become a much more comfortable and enjoyable way to stay connected while on the go.
Thank you for continuing to develop and evolve Second Life, and for taking the time to consider feedback from your community.
