Add the the texture coordinate system to the projector and allow it to be animated just like llSetLinkTextureAnim() so we can project sprite images.

Heheh, I almost got this functional, but I honestly don't think it can actually function.
I used the idea of the old CRT monitors. With three projectors of Red, Green and Blue Lights with animated masks to give the individual colours animation.
My last experiment involved using with three cameras to work out the distortion between the three projectors with projection UV maps.
Reggie from SLEA got static images working through directly projecting the images from 3 prim that are all the same size and position.
However the instant you add the animated mask you can't have all three projecting from the same point.

Better would be adding a 'image source face' selector. This would let us project anything we could put on that face, animating textures, MOAP, whatever new thing get's added down the line.
Default to face 5 for simple prim cube lights.
Having a source-face selected should force the viewer to always load that texture full resolution regardless of apparent size on screen.
