Pathfinding system proposed removal
animats Resident
At the last Server User Group meeting, there was discussion of removing the pathfinding system from Second Life. This would break my NPCs, so I'm not too happy about this. I don't need full pathfinding, though; just something comparable to llGetStaticPath to do route planning. I never turn on full SL pathfinding. I just use the static navmesh. Things which do that don't show up as active pathfinding objects.
There are now good open source navmesh generators. See https://github.com/recastnavigation/recastnavigation as an example. That's probably better than the old Havok pathfinding engine.
If we're going to have AI characters in SL, whether they are avatars or animesh, they need some kind of navigation system so they can move through the world. Otherwise they are boring. SL ought to have some solution in this space.
This needs further discussion. Comments?
