Colors are replaced with black in system avatar layers that use a grayscale mask

This is a problem specific to the old system avatars like Ruth. The Facial Definition and Body Definition layers should apply white highlights. The Rosy Complexion and Lip Pinkness layers should apply red and pink colors to the face and lips. Instead, these layers are being rendered with their colors replaced with black.
Steps to reproduce:
- Wear the Ruth avatar from the system library (Library/Clothing/More Outfits/Ruth)
- Crank up Facial Definition, Body Definition, Rosy Complexion, and Lip Pinkness on Ruth's skin
- Ruth's skin is shaded black in spots where highlights should be, and on her lips and cheeks
Additional information:
These layers use grayscale TGAs as a layer mask, which are being promoted internally to four-channel textures with black fill. When the layer colors are multiplied against black, the result is black. If you replace the grayscale TGAs with four-channel versions that have a white fill color, you'll be able to see the colors render correctly on your own avatar.

Reviving this because I believe this issue is important to fix, along with other currently deprecated features such as the Away animation and the avatar cloth simulation. The classic avatar still deserves proper maintenance and respect. These are not minor details. It is my opinion that they are part of what keeps the system stable and historically consistent.
Many users continue to rely on system avatars, and intend to use them despite the ability to "upgrade", and they serve as a reminder of what Second Life has always been. While mesh is now the standard, it remains an attachment to the invisible Ruth or Roth underneath.
My concern is that the ongoing neglect of these features, like for example the deprecation of Avatar Cloth and Away status animationānone of which the community has asked to have removedāmay eventually reach a plateau. Linden Lab may be forced to decide to either specifically abandon the system avatar entirely or replace it with something new to "fix" the issues shown in your attachment, Ciramour.
That outcome would be a loss. I hope that more attention is given to this. I've been waiting for quite a long time, and have recently found more has been done to limit the system avatar's uses.
