ExtraFPS - Middy (Legacy) enviornment halo effect around AVs
tracked

- I am having an issue where I see a halo around AVs when the environment lighting is set to Midday (Legacy) while running the Official-SL-viewer-7-1-11-12363455226
- Also tested with the Firestorm Extra FPS beta 7.1.12.77211. and see the same issue only when the environment lighting is set to Midday (Legacy) under World > Environment > Midday Legacy
- When set to Midday from the Environment World > Environment > Midday no halo effect appears
- This issue isn't present when running the Firestorm public release build 7.1.11.76496 that is pre-PBR
Steps to reproduce:
Menu: World > Environment > Midday Legacy
* The issue is present with even if Screen Space Reflections is turned disabled
My GPU is an AMD RX 6700 XT.
That being said this halo issue only manifests in Midday (Legacy) in ExtraFPS enabled viewer so seem unlikely it is the AMD GPU or drivers since this issue is not present if the viewer is PBR viewer such as that viewer prior to ExtraFPS such as FireStorm 7.1.11.76496
- My friend doesn't see it the halo issue when he runs the the Official-SL-viewer-7-1-11-12363455226 or Firestorm Extra FPS beta 7.1.12.77211 and set his set his environment to Midday (Legacy)
Would be useful to know if others users running ExtraFPS with an AMD GPU see this sam issue to better determine if this is a bug that specifically affects the graphics of AMD GPUs.

This issue may be related as it related to shadows issue with AMD GPUs. Shadows are also part of the same issue I have reported with ExtraFPS and AMD GPU's. Please review.

Thank you for testing those options, Ganymede.
I've imported this to https://github.com/secondlife/viewer/issues/3447 . We have no estimate when it may be implemented. Please see future updates here.

Hi Ganymede,
I suspect a new feature in SL does not get along well with the AMD video drivers. Unfortunately the Adrenaline drivers do not work on my AMD machine.
Please try turning off these features and see if one makes the halo go away:
* Set Graphics > Advanced Settings > Sharpening to 0.0
* Set Graphics > Advanced Settings > Antialiasing to SMAA
* Set Graphics > Advanced Settings > Antialiasing to Disabled
* Set Graphics > Advanced Settings > Tone Mapper Mix to 0.0
* Does the halo still happen if you wear an old outfit, for example the Bitsy outfit - the first outfit in the Avatar menu > Complete Avatars?

The following are my response to you questions:
- Adjusting Sharpening to 0.0 did not resolve the issue
- Setting Antialiasing to SMAA did not resolve the issue
- Setting Antialiasing to disabled did not resolve the issue
- Adjusting the Tone Mapper Mix to 0.0 did not resolve the issue
- The halo effect was still present after using the Complete Avatars option
This is unlikely a driver issue since using the same AMD GPU drives I don't see the halo effect on viewers that don't have the ExtraFPS change
- If Shadows are set to none the issue goes away
- The issue is only present in the Official SL viewer that has the ExtraFPS change and in the Firestorm ExtraFPS beta 7.1.12.77211
- Using the exact same AMD GPU driver on the Firestorm public release 7.1.11.76496 the halo effect isn't seen. If it was a drive issue I should be seeing it on any viewer is use but being that this is only see on ExtraFPS viewers that does indicate that this is due to same change made by Linden Lab in how Shadows are rendered since when not using an ExtraFPS viewer the issue isn't preset

The issue is worse now that I realized. I just noticed I see if both on Midday and well as Midday (Legacy). It is not just limited to Midday (Legacy) as I initially had thought. See the screenshot I have added

Hello Dan,
- I have included a screenshot of my graphic settings while running the Official Second Life viewer (same issue both with it and the Firestorm Extra FPS beta 7.1.12.77211)
- Also this issue doesn't seem to be occurring on all sims. I was at The Mens Dept shopping sim SLurl is http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/TMD/111/94/22 but not limited to just that sim. You might want to mirror my setting and go to that location and test. I also can meet with you in world if that would helo
- Zoom in near you AV or other and camming around them you can see the halo effect. It is subtle but is there when the Environment lighting is set to Midday (Legacy)
- If Shadow are set to None the halo effect goes away
- On the Firestorm public release 7.1.11.76496 there is not issue with Midday (Legacy) using the same settings. This issue occurs an an ExtraFPS where the GPU is AMD.

Hi Ganymede.
I don't see this bug on my Win11 / AMD Radeon RX 6800M laptop.
Please run the Second Life Release 7.1.11.12363455226 viewer and tell us which of the Graphics > Quality & Speed slider positions show this bug, starting at Mid+ and going up to Ultra. I assume the bug will not be visible on Mid+ because shadows are off for the Mid+ preset.

I was able to replicate it on an laptop that had an integrated AMD 780M card so this does seem to be affecting AMD GPUs specifically. Still would be betting to find someone with a dedicated AMD GPU.

- My friend is running the Firestorm Extra FPS beta 7.1.12.77211
- Also, he is using a NVidia RTX 4070 Ti GPU
- The driver he is using is the GeForce Game Ready Driver version 566.36 which was released on 12/05/2024
Are your graphics drivers up to date?
- Yes, I am running the last AMD Adrenalin driver, version 24.12.1 released on 11/7/2024
- Does your avatar have any PBR materials applied?
No, noting PBR. Using BoM and not clothing or other attachment for PBR or any other sort of lighting
Does adjusting the Shadows setting in Advanced Graphics have any effect on the issue?
If I set Shadows to None the halo goes away.
