Hi Melody,
Further performance fixes have been recently added to the latest ExtraFPS build here: https://releasenotes.secondlife.com/viewer/7.1.11.11750364439.html
Can you confirm if your performance has increased on your machine using this build?
For others also reading this that are still experiencing performance issues using the above build, please provide your environment info along with the FPS range you're hitting (This can be observed in the Statistics floater via Ctrl+Shift+1)

Atlas Linden Things still really dip off, but then appear to recover after a minute. I'll need some more extensive runtime with it though. LOD settings don't appear to work well/at all though, a lot of blurry textures.

Melody OwO exactly this! My viewer will just lag and go down to 4 fps for a few minutes then go back up, even if I’m standing in same spot and do nothing. Just does it randomly a lot. I have a pretty beefy computer and internet and SL is the laggiest game I have on it now

I'm surprised they are even accepting comments about this because at the end of the day, they are just a typical corporation that doesn't care about us and it seems not even about all the money we give them, one way or another.

[February 2025 UPDATE]
After upgrading my computer, I noticed the fans were still quite loud. After some troubleshooting, I discovered that disabling "Smart Fan Mode" in my BIOS and updating to the latest BIOS firmware made a huge difference. The noise has been greatly reduced, and I’m finally able to enjoy SL again. I’ve also noticed some nice improvements in both the Firestorm Beta and the official viewer with the latest update. Thank you Lindens! ♥️
---------------------------------------------------
I love the look of PBR and appreciate the effort to improve graphics, but I’m concerned about users with older devices that can’t handle it. My GPU fans are so loud since PBR it’s made my tinnitus (ear ringing) unbearable, affecting my sleep. I can’t imagine how users with older cards, or Intel-based Macs, are managing.
Sure we cannot expect everyone the luxury on extremely old devices, but it would be nice to be able to turn off PBR without having to change viewers. This goes for Official and Firestorm. Otherwise you’re basically killing off Second Life's users forcing them to upgrade or download older viewers that can cause security risks, bugs, and overall issues running both viewers.

Ever since PBR launched my performance has been noticeably worse and my fans have been running on high non stop (and I keep graphics at mid/low mid with a draw distance of only 48) I respect that Linden wanted to make the graphics look nicer but my machine isn't that old and its not been a pleasant experience. I don't think pushing out PBR was worth it if it means tanking performance and killing my machine. I'd much rather linden focus their efforts on improving quality of life for things like groups, search and other functional details rather than seemingly focus on the visuals only.

tapkoinu Resident Aww I'm glad its not only me with fans going crazy. I upgraded my graphics card thinking it would make a difference, but it hasn't. Sure I might get a little more FPS, but the fan are insanely loud with a be quiet case. I just wish SL would create a turn on/off PBR option, it would solve all our issues until its completely optimised for everyone to use.

g13n Resident tapkoinu Resident You DO realize you can limit FPS and still have amazing performance especially on those monster cards? You'd be hard pressed to prove an actual decrease in performance while running at 60 FPS instead of 100+ and your GPU fans will be MUCH quieter as well.
g13n Resident
Melody OwO Oh? I had no idea you could do that. Thanks for reaching me something new. :-)

Melody OwO Yes I have had my system limit my FPS, I've told the system to cap it at 40-45 (i forget which at this time). Problem is, thers been more times where the FPS has been horrible at times, going down to 10-12, and let's not forget the fans feeling like they're going full bore almost all the time. and now very crowded sims are very sluggish for me (and that's limiting the number of non imposter avis to 1-2, i used to have it be around 3-4 but that creates a noticeable tank in performance. For me its really frustrating because my laptop isn't that old (we're talking 2-3 years now) When i got it, i was happy because finally i had a machine running SL smoothly and then after PBR rolled out, things went back to being crappy again. PBR hasn't created an enjoyable experience for me, its made things less enjoyable.

tapkoinu Resident If your fans are still loud, try turning off Smart Fan Mode in BIOS and check for firmware updates. It made a huge difference for me when using a PBR viewer, and my temps stayed the same whether Smart Fan Mode was on or off.

I remember a few years ago, if you had let's say 100 FPS in a specific spot/area... It would stay at 100 fps even if you visited some other regions and teleported back to that same area... but now it's just impossible to have constant framerate, log in somewhere, wait for it to load, take note of your FPS, now go visit a few regions, come back exactly where you logged in, notice your fps is super low, and you have to relog to fix it... it does that on all viewers i've tried (official, FS, alchemy)
This fps degradation is happening also if you stay in the same region and cam around a lot or do object editing for a while, makes no sense
(Maybe it's my setup or I don't know, but i find this behavior very strange)

Is something going on with the grid ? i cannot seem to get logged in no matter what. I keep getting them same error message each time
Science Copperfield
The root causes for horrible FPS vary greatly. Is it my fault? Is it my viewer or settings? Is it because of my operating system, graphics card or device drivers? Is it my network? Is it a second life infrastructure issue? I just can't pinpoint why my FPS is at 30, then if I walk 10 steps to the left it drops to 8
shrugs
What I would really like is some kind of advanced logging or performance monitor that tells me exactly why my experience is crap. Trust me, if there's a debug setting, it's been set I just can not pinpoint wtf is going on

I have an i7-7700, 32 gb of ram and a Gtx 1660 super gpu.. When I loaded SL for the first time on this machine it didn't set mirrors to default. What do I need in this thing to have mirrors optimized? I mean, do we need state of the art top of the line PCs now? How far do you need to push your userbase away before you say "That's enough?"
Science Copperfield
Drake1 Nightfire I've been on Ubuntu since version 6 and a FS user since it was phoenix and firestorm didn't exist yet. We're wayyyy past "improve graphics speed" But always happy to meet other Linux users :-)

Same issue, on a 5-year old MacBook Pro with Radeon Pro vega 20 4GB GPU. Current official viewer, current Firestorm - all make the fans spin like crazy and fps drop under 5 even with lowest settings.
On pre-PBR Firestorm, I always had to "disable ambient lighting" to get no-fan-noise and good framerates. However this setting is not available post-PBR anymore.
PBR is leaving a lot of people on older hardware behind! And mind you, my 5 year old MBP runs games like Baldurs Gate or Final Fantasy without any problems!
