macOS – Textures grey / missing in Second Life Viewer RC 'Atlasaurus' 7.1.9.9620320242

This is very much the same as what has been reported in third party viewers (TPVs) (https://feedback.secondlife.com/bug-reports/p/textures-stay-gray-in-firestorm-viewer) but it affects SLV too if you run Release Candidate Atlasaurus - 7.1.9.9620320242
It doesn't affect the SLV release version but does affect RC Atlasaurus - 7.1.9.9620320242
It was initially thought to be a TPV issue but it recently occurred to me that the SLV Release is at 7.1.8 whereas most of the TPVs are at 7.1.9 and they have this problem. And now testing in SLV 7.1.9.9620320242 it is exactly the same.
To reproduce, use the viewer's default settings, on a Mac. In my case I am using a MacBook Pro with an M1 Max processor.
- Go to an object and texture heavy region with draw distance at around 128m
- Fly or cam around so a large number of textures are loaded
Eventually some textures appear to stop loading / show as blank grey. This also affects textures on HUDs and images in profile and group floaters, and hud icons show as grey too.
Additionally, textures that were previously loaded and should be cached will show as grey when relogging or TPing back to a location where they were previously showing.

Note
As per tests done on TPVs, and thanks to others, this can apparently be remedied by setting the debug setting
RenderGLMultiThreadedTextures=TRUE
. This appears to work in SLV too, but I do not deeply understand this debug flag or know whether it might cause some other unintended effects.Log In

The probable cause of this issue has been linked to having a low FPS.
Please try out the latest new viewer, DeltaFPS to see if this resolves the issue for you and please let us know if the issue persists: https://releasenotes.secondlife.com/viewer/7.1.10.10622905308.html

Atlas Linden I will try it ASAP. Fairly sure my FPS was between 30-40 when testing but I’ll let you know what I experience with 7.1.10 from your link, thank you.

Atlas Linden I've just tried this viewer, and it looks like I didn't have the issue for 30 mins on busy event and a busy region as well. I'm using M2 Max. I had between 10 and 40 FPS.

This version does seem to work better, render time is quick and FPS holds at a good rate.
The problem I now see is if I visit a busy area, especially those known for lag like certain DJ clubs (any of the busiest on Destinations should give an idea). When first arriving FPS is good and static objects render as usual but avatars are clouds. It takes much longer for the clouds to fully rez and as everyone appears, FPS slows massively, eventually bypassing “normal” lag behavior - and hitting slideshow mode, eventually to the point of loss of UI control (including spinning beachball on my mac) requiring Force Quit.
This is reproducible by visiting any avatar-heavy region.
Firestorm’s 7.1.9 Release version runs beautifully with identical settings in the same locations (with the RenderGL debug setting on “true”). However the issue above is now also occurring on Firestorm’s 7.1.10 beta & alpha in addition to SLV.
EDIT: .....and....fixed! Version 7.1.10.10708851543 running great!

Atlas Linden it occurs with FPS above 100. Will run a comparison performance test and revert.

Thanks for the edited update Korach!

Atlas Linden The version you linked auto-updated itself to 7.1.10.10708851543 - presumably intentionally!
This seems to be
completely fixed
, and also runs a lot better. Yay :DEdit: My system info https://pastebin.com/FzukDweA (link has 1 year expiry)

RenderGLMultiThreadedTextures=TRUE does not always work.. Still having loads of issues with textures, even running latest SL viewer (7.1.9.10515727195). Textures will remain gray, or will start to load and remain in blurry state for up to an hour. How am I supposed to use this as a platform? Running latest M3 chip.

I've been following this one too, as I have seen it occur on Alts in Firestorm, but also have observed it on various versions of the Atlasaurus SL Viewer. I use an M1 Mac Studio.
The behaviour usually begins after a sustained period of being immersed in areas with a significant amount of content and textures to load, such as this morning after about 2 hours working through a few residential regions using Second Life Release 7.1.9.10326512121 (64bit)
Textures randomly unload to grey on surrounding items and also my avatar itself and 'stick' that way for some time. After a while,
some
missing textures will rez back in one-by-one, equally randomly while others may unload in their place, almost as if some limit has been reached. A re-log will clear the behaviour, at least for a time, but it may come back sooner rather than later on the next occasion. It does seem to occur irrespective of the setting of : RenderGLMultiThreadedTexture

Garden Mole Interesting that
RenderGLMultiThreadedTexture = TRUE
apparently doesn't solve it for you. I haven't tried SLV since Atlasaurus. FWIW I have to enable that debug flag and then relog for it to make an obvious difference. Also the debug flag gets unchecked when changing graphics presets, at least in Firestorm.

Does not resolve for me in my testing either same Macbook Pro M1

Charlotte Bartlett How strange, it makes a day and night difference for me – in version 7.1.9.9620320242

Having same issues with this on my M3 iMac. Installed the client and teleported to TMD. Grey textures on many of the vendors. Made the debug change. Relogged. Back to TMD still grey textures. Reverted back to 7.1.8.9375512768, went to TMD and textures loaded fine.

I have the same issue on a Mac. it stays gray or blurry for few hours to a day.
I totally understand what this is frustrating.

Thanks for the report Alix!
This issue is now tracked. Stay tuned to future updates for the fix.
Also, thank you for including the debug setting info!

Atlas Linden can we combine this to add it also impacts inventory textures as grey once it "bugs out". The debug setting does not resolve for it.
