Ability to rename a group
planned
Amber Lyndhurst
I have been in bussiness for over 17 years in sl with the same group, I would love to add the word "Rentals" to the end of the group name so it explains what the group is about and is easier to find, if we can rename AV's, surely we can rename groups? the only way to rename a group at the present is to create a new group, evict everyone from the old group then invite them to the new group.

I would truly appreciate this feature so very much, paid or free or restricted to premium - whatever. I'd truly love to rename my store group and not have to migrate people to a new group when I've spent years growing the one I have.

This would be such an amazing feature & one that has been needed for a very long time! :)

Suggestions to Improve Second Life Groups
I'd like to propose a few improvements to the Second Life group system, especially from the perspective of long-time users, store owners, and event organizers who rely on groups as essential tools for communication and branding.
Targeted Notices by Role
Groups often have various roles such as designers, bloggers, or customers. It would be highly beneficial if owners or officers could choose which specific roles a notice is sent to. This would allow for more personalized and relevant communication within the group, improving both organization and user experience.
Activity Log for Group Membership
Currently, tracking who joins or leaves a group requires exporting and comparing CSV files manually. Implementing an internal activity log (entries, exits, role changes, etc.) would streamline group management and provide better oversight without the need for external tools.
Option to Delete Notices
Sometimes, mistakes happen—such as sending the wrong item or notice to a group. As a store owner, I once accidentally sent a full fatpack instead of a demo. Unfortunately, there's no way to delete a notice once it's sent. A delete function would allow group managers to correct errors quickly and maintain professionalism.
Founder Status Review – Clear Ownership Transfer
When a group is created, the creator is permanently listed as the “Founder,” even if they leave the group or hand it over to someone else. It would be more accurate and useful to rethink this model. For example, instead of always displaying “Founded by [Name],” the group could show “Owned by [Name]” to reflect current, active ownership.
This idea could work similarly to how transferable items function in Second Life. Imagine ownership like a no-copy, transferable item: once it's given to someone else, only that person holds true possession—even if other members have “Owner” roles. This would provide a clearer understanding of who is actually responsible for managing the group.
Increase the Number of Roles
Currently, the limit of 10 roles can be restrictive for more complex group structures. Increasing this limit to 15 would allow for more flexibility in organizing members and assigning responsibilities, especially when combined with the improvements suggested above.

Happy to see this is now planned.

I have been wondering this very same thing. Recently I created a new group and sent notices for a month asking people to move over to it. On the final day when I closed the group down, I had a slue of people messaging me asking me why they were kicked.
I sent notices weekly, even on the day of, sent notecards to all group members, invited all group members by UUID to the new group and yet people thought they had done something wrong.
I look forward to the day when we can change group names.

Premium Plus members should not have to pay for this renaming service.

Loni Onyx no one should have to pay for it, it should've been a feature from the beginning.

all it would need to prevent greifing/trolling is a limit on how often it can be changed.

Pay to change GROUP NAME

You can make a group in 2006 and in 2023 want to change the group name because of branding or changes to how the group functions. You don't want to just make a new group, because you would be gambling on the fact that people would follow you to that new group. Being able to pay a small fee $10.00 should be possible with a ticket. The fee would discourage this just being something done willy nilly, but could help a lot of group messes.

I would even be happy with a "display name" concept for groups. I named my store group in 2009 and the concept of my store has morphed over the years. (I originally made gowns. Now more latex and club wear.) My original store name included the word "couture" which I have dropped. I'm not going to try to move over 12,000 group members to a new group so I'm stuck with the old store/group name. I would pay a small fee for this. Small like $5-$10. (If it was $40 I wouldnt do it.)

I think a reasonable fee should be applied to this so it is not abused. For me, reasonable is something under 5$.
