Allow Different types of Groups (and group limits)
Alphosus Bainbridge
I'm honestly not sure why there needs to be a limit on the number of groups your in, but I'll assume there is some reason. Either way, what I'd love to see are different TYPES of groups created to allow for different limits. Perhaps, say, Shops, Social, and Land... and then Social and Land might count against your account limits, but Shops would not. Right now I have most of my groups eaten up by shops that I paid to be in (for discounts, etc.) and I can't just leave and re-enter as needed.

I've long wanted to see a split between social groups and land management groups...

Nyx Onyx OMG this so much. SL groups are organized on the assumption they involve land management, but nowadays (okay, at least since I joined SL 16 years ago, and probably before) the vast majority of groups are for social groups and merchant/store groups. If we had a different kind of group for the latter without the need to check it every time you cross a region boundary, surely that would reduce server drag.

The limits are there presumably because of the impact they have - storing the notifications and chat, and for each member storing undelivered notifications until they next login. Judging by the store groups i'm in they are the worst - very chatty and plenty of notices. By contrast, land groups I'm in don't send notices or use chat and have small memberships as they're just used for access. It seems to me it should be these low impact access-only groups that shouldn't use up group slots. Maybe have an unlimited number of "access" type groups, which don't allow chat or notices and limit membership to say 30 or 40 (maybe less)

Logan Elf - that's an interesting idea for sure. I could see a version where options could be choses too... like... when making a group (whether for store or land or anything) you can choose whether or not chat can happen, maybe how long its stored (or IF it's stored) and things like that... if its not using resources then it does not have to count against the limit. Of course this would mean the group creator would have to do this still, and they might choose not to... which would not fix anything :P -- but its still an interesting idea to iterate over :)

What if paid groups were placed in a separate, unlimited category that doesn’t count against the regular group limit? That way, users could stay in shop or discount groups without sacrificing space for social or land groups.
In other words, we are "paying" for extend the limit using this new "paid" category.

hinaichigo Xaris There are groups that have the occasional "free join" (as a promotion or some event requires the group to be free). Also some groups only temporarily add a fee for a few weeks to combat the beggar bots. What happens when these go free join? Do they suddenly use your free group slots? If you join during the free period, you haven't paid anything to get the privilege when they go back to being paid.
Of course group owners could just slap on a fee of L$1 thus giving you in effect unlimited groups.

Logan Elf , ok, you are totally right, this is not the way.
