Allow group closure without sending eject messages to all members
tracked
chew Resident
Currently, closing a group requires the group owner to first eject every single member. This sends a message to every member that makes them worry that they've done something wrong.
Please add a method for silently removing all members when disbanding the group.
Alternatively, consider a term less pointed than "ejected" in IM notification sent to each member, or allow the person performing the ejection to include the reason for removal.

The biggest problem to me is the removal and the message used. I also don’t understand why it’s so difficult to change.

While this request has merits of its own, would allowing Group Rename solve most of the underlying issues related to this request?
Mo Elara
Kyle Linden, not from my perspective, if I understand you corrrectly. If the group owner chose to dedicate the group to entirely different topics than before (i.e. switching from shoes to real estate), it would mean to spam the whole group with topics they did not sign up for.
Ruby Starlight
Kyle Linden No, this would create more problems than it solves. Imagine signing up for Second Lifers Who Love Christ and the next day it’s changed to Lusty Hoes for Beasts because the owner either had some change of lifestyle or just wanted to troll people.
Madi Melodious
Ruby Starlight This is a good point. On renaming groups there should be a "accept" option for people in the group. That way if the group is renamed to something you don't agree, before you show up in the group, you are allowed to leave.

Kyle Linden I would really like to be able to just delete a group without having to eject every member thus sending them notices. However, I'd also like to rename because.. typos do happen LOL

Kyle LindenI am myself in agreement with Isabela - I have a VERY old group I'm in which no longer has a purpose, and renaming it isn't what I'm looking for (though this, too, can aid others). While I am personally not ready to disband said group, I would like to not have to go down a list of even 30 - 40 members and have to kick them each individually. Equally, the message about ejection is, to put it mildly, somewhat intimidating, lending the impression that the person ejected somehow did something wrong. If the group disappears, it then looks like the creator kicked them and maybe made the group invisible, somehow, etc.
I think being able to shut down a group at the creator's choice with an auto-ejection for members (and, hopefully, a better message such as "This group has disbanded" might be best.
On the matter of being able to rename, again, I find myself in Isabela's court - it would be most helpful, for a myriad of reasons (yes, typos included).
Thank you for the consideration.

Kyle Linden Allowing residents to customize the eject message would solve the issue. Those who want to be notified will be notified, and group owners won't get screamed at by volatile residents.

Kyle Linden, no. Your suggestion would be useful but I think the suggested approach is needed.

Kyle Linden It would help with some of the cases but not all of them. Sometimes group owners/staff fall out, sometimes they pass away or the group just becomes inactive. It can be an absolute chore to manually disband a group for whatever reasons may be. I don't particularly agree with silently removing people but being able to say something other than just "You have been ejected" in a manner similar to how we have custom unavailable/away/block messages would be nice.
marxman1313 Resident
Ruby Starlight That's a pretty extreme case that won't be common...and you can't just deny everyone a good feature because of a few bad eggs.
Kira Balestra
Kyle Linden Nope. We should have both options. One option has nothing to do with the other, and it's incomprehensible that we don't have either yet.
Ruby Starlight
marxman1313 Resident Yeah, my example of a Christian group going to a bestiality group is extreme and mostly used to be colorful. But it's not unlikely for "Biden Lovers" to suddenly turn into "Trump is Our King!" or a club group to go from a general dance club for the average Second Lifer to change into "Club Jesus". Don't believe me? Take a trip down to Muddy's and tell me how church service goes on Sunday. Second Life is full of jerks, weirdos, perverts, griefers, flip-floppers, raging narcissists, extreme thinkers, and much more. I'll bet my entire salary that the ability to change group names would cause a plethora of problems.
marxman1313 Resident
I'm aware. The examples you're presenting are still extreme and unnecessary. Your more likely to discourage conversation and encourage arguments that deviate from the current topic with them. Plus for better and for worse politics beliefs under most cases are not something that Second Life or Linden Labs can or should moderate. Those efforts are left to the community for which have a presence in multiple social media platforms. You might even be able to talk about it on the official forms, but here is not the place.

You could send a notice before you do so...

Most definitely
not
silent removal of the group — I have some severe memory issues at times, and having things just disappear on me is, exceedingly disturbing because my first instinct is that I accidentally deleted it myself, and if I don't go find it again, I'll forget what it was, and so forth. That said, yes, so is the "you have been ejected" message. Please change this to something better. I also +1 for providing for a note from the groups owner if they wish (and I'd say this should be immune to message caps, you can only be in so many groups, after all).
Aylin Moonshadow
I don't think that "silently removing members" is a good idea. I would certainly notice I was no longer in a group. It would cause more confusion than it is worth. We need the ability to send a custom message.

Please. Closing a group shouldn’t cause this much anxiety and terse messaging
Elliot Evergarden
To add to that if there are multiple groups owners and let's say 2 owners passed away, the group will remain there forever.
Gwyneth Llewelyn
Elliot Evergarden which is more of a problem in a virtual world with an aging population, such as SL. I agree. I'm part of a community of almost 100 members, of which I'm the third youngest — at 55.

I agree!!!
AAngel Braveheart
I’ve had to close two groups recently because of a historical spelling mistake which meant the group could not be found in search that I inherited.
A better reason would be very acceptable than ‘ejected’.
Gwyneth Llewelyn
AAngel Braveheart a better way to deal with
that
would, of course, to request that groups could
change their names 🤣 Problem solved!AAngel Braveheart
Gwyneth Llewelyni agree, but technically it appears to be not functional possible.

Just passing by to press F in homage to Blueberry CSR team, that had to remove 50k from a closing group as the store closed.
