Just some observations about PBR:
It is killing many of of our lower resource friends because their hardware cannot run it.
i keep seeing grey endlessly on it. I am trying and trying fix it. all the fixes dont do shit it same thing endlessly. I got banned groups for saying that noting works to fix it. it is causing me tons of issues which isnt right for me as i know its not my pc its doing this to many others too. please do not keep using this new change its lovely on pcs that can handle but many cannot so we are screwed over now so please dont do this new change

This has been closed without comment from LL? As a note: the other post that was "merged" with this one had 118 upvotes... significantly more than 27. So LL merges two different threads so that nothing makes sense... then immediately CLOSES this thread without a word? Seriously.

Cynos3D Resident PBR is however highly disruptive and changes like this should be NON-DESTRUCTIVE which it is not. It is affecting many older items and makes them look bad, because the rendering and lighting system is simply bad. SL is not A STANDARD in gaming industry and it will never be. Why would it need PBR? I am also against PBR. It should be options. In my Group many people dislike it and wont use a viewer untill they are used to do so.
Faris Bloodrose
Ria Brianna No, is not anymore, I tested other viewers Firestorm is the one with worst performance in PBR, I have 2 computers, a laptop one with integrated GPU (Aka, no GPU) and the desktop one, the performance with for example: Alchemy viewer is like double compared with Firestorm.

Eren Padar Survived? No, agonized, the playerbase got a peak in pandemic, but now the number of current players are low.
SL is the main income for many creators, we feed or families thanks to SL, an optional PBR just will make our work non-profitable enough. I did my last release with PBR and non-pbr textures and was a nightmare!
Let's mention that I own 2 computers: A laptop without GPU (Integrated Intel) and the desktop, trust me, the laptop is weak to say something, and CAN handle PBR. My old computer of over 10yo COULD handle PBR, so if your PC cannot, well, maybe it is time to try to not run SL in a toaster?
If PBR is optional, will have no sense for us, the creators, to keep creating in this platform. We have plenty and more profitable platforms than SL, most of us sticks because we love SL, we want it to survive.
No creators=No SL :D
Ghoul Waifu
Faris Bloodrose That doesnt make sense. My items are non-PBR and i am constantly being told my items look very very good in PBR viewers. Stop trying to force PBR like that.
Faris Bloodrose
Ghoul Waifu is because the pbr itself, the problem is you are asking for optional PBR without knowing what pbr is. Non PBR items looks good on PBR viewer because of PBR because even the old system of textures get beneficial of the new lighting system and auto generated probes. Also I have to mention that PBR is a tool to make creators life easier. No creators=No SL. During 15 years we had to do a lot of tweaks to make stuff look decent with old system. And that is thanks to us, not because SL looked good before, is because we broke our heads to make it look good.
Ghoul Waifu
Faris Bloodrose You assume i don't know. But i am not too sure you know what PBR is. 15 Years of SL - alot of us have that under the belt. It does not make you unique. Ged Gud
SL Feedback
Hello, and thank you for your feedback regarding PBR. We understand the concerns you've raised about its impact on lower resource hardware. This issue has already been reported by another user, and we have merged your post with the existing one to consolidate all feedback. Please follow the existing post for any future updates. We appreciate your input and patience as we work to address these concerns.

Codex Alpha It takes time, you have to configure a lot of stuff in the texture changing hud, also extra scrips. Do you want a more laggy SL experience? Make PBR optional and you'll see how laggy it gets
Ghoul Waifu
Faris Bloodrose Get a better Texture HUD. Exobyte Lyte HUD. No configuration needed. Thats a user error on your side :D
Ghoul Waifu
Faris Bloodrose Also apparently you have the God Pc you will be fine with a laggy HUD.
Faris Bloodrose
Ghoul Waifu I actually have 2 pc. One laptop handheld computer without GPU but an integrated intel one and a desktop. And I play SL in both. I can get 50 and 60 fps on laptop since PBR, because PBR works better!

Faris with respect... that post is imaginary exaggerated fiction.
I would recommend you read my first post on this thread... and then stop running around waving your arms and posting imaginary doom and gloom scenarios. PBR isn't a magic cure-all for SL, and BP is still going to be supported regardless of ridiculous wild claims. If you don't want to create in BP... then DON'T. Make your choice... and let others do the same.
If you fear that SL is going to die because LL makes PBR optional for those whose systems can't support it... well, that's just not rational thinking, is it?
Start paying attention to the very simple suggestion the OP is making: allow people who can't use PBR to opt-out of those graphics so they can still use Second Life. Don't boot customers from the grid over a graphics standard. It's just that simple. It's either that or they leave SL... which seems to be what you're advocating. Frankly, that's just callous.
Ghoul Waifu
Eren Padar Yeah that's truely in his head honestly. I know many people who do not care for PBR and rolled back instantly to non-PBR viewers. I think they should make it like the Shadows settings. Check mark if you wanna use it.

Ghoul Waifu I have to say it's a real shame that LL decided to "merge" these two threads, because now some of it doesn't make sense. Very valid points were made in the other thread and it had 118 upvotes. Why merge two threads just because they discuss similar matters? They were separate threads and should have remained that way.
I agree with you that Faris' "doom and gloom" scenario is creative fiction. We've seen this kind of nonsense all over these forums, pro-PBR people screaming that SL will die if we don't have PBR... when that's not even what people are recommending.
The ONLY thing being recommended is that users have the ability to opt-out. How is that skin off anyone elses's nose? The resulting paranoia and screams of "That's not even possible! We can't do that!" have frankly been ridiculous.
Codex Alpha
Faris Bloodrose
Apparently that's LL's recommendation after all:
UPDATE: Apparently the plan is PBR + Baked Diffuse in 'legacy' slot
Ren Float
Zeth Starlight There's a REASON why I've been playing SL, it's one of the few recreational activities that didn't (until recently) require a "state of the art" system. If you want "OMG GRAPHICS!!!" play something else.
Cynos3D Resident
Eren Padar "And frankly... I've visited PBR "display sims" and haven't really been that impressed. Imo a lot of people aren't really going to notice that much of a difference."
Completely missing the point that everything you're seeing now is a WIP and that Physically Based Rendering is an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT shader model based on realistic lighting that still requires many more feature addons to look as intended. Why do you think we need Blinn-phong going forward? everything you used to be able to make with it is still possible under PBR, it's just going to be more efficient. By the time it's fully implemented it should look like any other modern video game made in the last 10 years and i assure you that you most certainly will "notice that much of a difference."
This argument is like judging a game based on a leak of the alpha before you've even seen the final product. It's common knowledge at this point that one should reserve their judgement of a game based on the final package. Why are you putting SL on a special pedestal, it's fundamentally just an other MMORPG with a building system stuck on a terrible engine from Circa 2004.
