I would love to see the ability for people to get the server code and be able to run your own regions on AWS servers you rent yourself.

We would all like that, but we know it's almost impossible; it would imply a considerable cost to the company's revenue. Perhaps a viable option where both company and consumer benefit would be to make the server code available to the developer, and Linden would charge a monthly fee or perhaps a one-time fee to register their server on the grid, making it accessible. With all the expenses Linden is making, such as implementing the Lua language for the game, this private server implementation should be a priority for them, since many players and developers attracted to Second Life would leave soon after discovering how much it costs to own and maintain an island in its current format.

WIll never happen as it will reveal how little AWS server costs actually are - compared to the very high price LL charges us.
