Good Neighbors - Better Floating Text
Extrude Ragu
Floating text as implemented will display 'above' any object that would otherwise obscure it.
This causes a problem on the mainland where a neighbor is able accidentally or otherwise to 'visually encroach' on your land by having an object with floating text near their parcel border.
This in turn can reduce the land value of said land as it affects enjoyment.
I propose simply letting objects obscure floating text so it is less visibly disruptive in the case a neighbor places floating text near the parcel border.

As a region owner, I have the ability to enforce that problem. I also have mainland and would block the offending object and or contact the owner directly.

Couldn't you derender or block the offending object? I have done this with a noisy sound emitting object from across the street.

I do not consider 'personal' solutions to be solutions as it affects all visitors to my land, not just me.
The value of land to me is that all visitors can enjoy my land, without resorting to difficult hacks that require advanced user knowledge of the platform or third party viewers.
Encroaching floating text negatively affects enjoyment for me and my visitors who do not expect to need third party viewers or touch advanced settings etc. And thus it reduces the value of the land.

Extrude Ragu have you considered asking or mentioning this to the creator of the object? Perhaps they are not aware of the impact it is having on your land?

Personally I hate the recent changes to float text, because even nearly-invisible particles destroy it and make the particles or semi-transparent object look painfully bad. Note that if you're using Firestorm (and maybe other TPVs), you can hide float text or reduce its visible distance.

Toothless Draegonne Interesting. I tried this against some text that has been bothering me recently. It seems that the prim has to be a certain distance in-front before the text becomes obscured. I'm not sure how this distance is calculated, but it seems to be quite a large distance (Check my screenshots - about 3.5m before a prim can obscure it).
I am aware of course that we can turn off floating text as an individual user preference, but as a solution this does not satisfy me because if for instance I am trying to deliver a high quality experience to a customer then it becomes unacceptable to expect every customer to turn this setting off and thus devalues my land by reducing the useful area.

Compared to your screenshot, I seem to be experiencing a different behaviour to you completely. I wonder why? Maybe it's because the floating text in my screenshot is part of a bigger linkset?
Extrude Ragu
I tested my theory in my sim today. Yeah, the bigger the object the floating text is attached to, the further the area that floating text will display 'above' walls

Extrude Ragu The wiki says about llSetText under Caveats: "Visibility distance increases with prim size." In Firestorm you can add the debug settings FSHudTextFadeDistance and FSHudTextFadeRange to the Quick Preferences (add that button to the button bar first).

As a proposed option on this could we have an option on parcel settings to not view float text from adjacent parcels similar to sounds now
Toothless Draegonne
North CrannockThis seems like it'd be a "better" way to do it. A check in parcel settings.
