Hide Birthdate
Tantrica Banana
In my opinion, the date i created my account is nothing i want to show at any and every occasion. it just fuels biases, like "Oh, this is a newbie" or "Oh, this is an account old as dust". Especially in Roleplay/Fantasy settings the info is of no relevance whatsoever
Hence i would like that the birthdate can still be read out via scripts but is optional to show on the profile.

EXCELLENT IDEA ! This is something that i have been asking for and should have been added years ago. Even if it is a premium member option i would switch in a second to premium. I don't need anyone knowing how many years i have been active in second life. You can pay to change your name , let me pay to hide my birthday. Just an excellent idea and i beg that linden labs adds this feature somewhere at some point.

to all those who are against hiding it: you make it sound like you personally interact in your shop or club with people, one-by-one and read their profiles. that is simply not how reality looks like. if i want to give out items only to avatars younger or older than a certain value, it is done by scripts.
I myself am not new to SL (duh) and i run stores, malls, RP areas. and most people who frequent my locations (with 10K+ traffic) i never even check their profiles. why would i want that?
However, when i roleplay with someone 1:1, then it is a different matter.

Display of account creation (birth) dates also helps or mentors or other groups that are dedicated to helping users to identify those that may require more help than others because of their relatively new account in SL.
Script-wise, one of the largest uses for this information has been to provide new accounts with products (clothing, hair, skins, accessories, and more) for free to help establish their accounts when users are first starting out and are likely to have limited to no L$ to spend.
These are just two examples of legitimate and beneficial use of this information, and I am afraid that failing to display the data or make it available to scripting would cause more issues than it solves. For this reason I do not believe this should even be an option, much less implemented for all profiles.

No, not a good idea. There are many legitimate reasons why people need public access to that info about a profile. I don't mean to come off rude but we were all new accounts once, you need to solve your social issues on your own instead of demanding a system wide change to solve your single use case.

Next we'll be wanting to hide the payment info status on profiles too because it fuels biases than an account might be an alt, after-all, the operator of an avatar that is only 1 day old, which has no pay info on file, yet has at least 20k+ Linden worth of avatar accessories (mesh body, mesh head etc) has the right not to stick out like a sore thumb... :P

From my perspective I don't like the idea because I like to keep an eye on my customers. Because my business is mainly for builders, why would someone that is 2 days old buy from me? It takes time to learn and also to understand what is wrong to do in SL. Full perm? Sure, I'll give this to all my friends, and so on and so on. New people may not realize the work that goes into things and think nothing of handing out free stuff to people. It goes so much deeper than just Roleplay. : (

SL Birthdate absolutely needs to be left available for means of identifying potential griefing vectors. Most people grief on a whim, not as a planned thing, that they're going to do "next week". So account age is an absolutely critical tool for large sim moderation tools. Sorry.
Coffee Pancake
Polymath Snuggler No it isn't. Targeted grifs don't go roll a new account in anger. They make them in advance or buy them.
Banning an avatar from a region does also seem to prevent that user coming back on an alt for a limited period of time.
Fear of crime is at an all time high, actual crime is at an all time low.
Vincent Nacon
Coffee Pancake There are more cons than pro in removing it. It's not an ideal solution to solve the "ageism" that trolls managed to force land managements resorted to. Time to think of a solution for the moderators to use before we can safely toggle the rez-date display.
The crime is low because it worked. Can't say I like the current solution though.
Coffee Pancake
Vincent Nacon The solution is for land owners to take an active interest in security and empower staff to deal with it on a case by case basis rather than setting up an automated wall.
The solution we have didn't work because it stopped the grifers. it worked because it helped kill what little retention we had and prevented the platform from growing.
We need new people .. they wont know the culture and they will be annoying. Sucks to be an oldbie. Change has to come to SL and it needs to start with ending the blockade on new account participation.
Vincent Nacon
Coffee Pancake That solution isn't new and it does work for some group, has existed for a long while now, but it doesn't actually provide the solution for those who wanted to automate it. That's what we're talking about here. Automation.
At some point in this debate, we're gonna end up suggesting that we should get an AI to manage it for them. Are we even at that point yet? Afraid not, but I can see that happening in the future.
Coffee Pancake
Vincent Nacon Automation in social settings is a curse.
Auto ban everyone under 30 days, there are no 0day old grifs, no newbies and no one has to care. Boring and sterile.
No ability to auto ban, now people have to be involved. People bring opinions and passion and the world isn't so clear cut anymore. Maybe an 0day grif gets though and makes a mess, maybe a lot of newbies do too. wow, suddenly we all have something to talk about. A little drama fuels a lot of engagement and involvement.
Ebbe was right .. grif is a good problem to have.

Account birthdate & age should remain in profiles, be inaccessible to script and be removed from access controls. (as should PIOF etc)
Account age and rez-days have positive cultural standing.
Being a new user is a black mark that prohibits access to locations and fosters hostility wrapped in assumptions of duplicity.
The new user experience is hard enough as it stands without oldbies having the means to easily devalue their presence and automatically block / eject them from experiences.
SL should be a friendly and welcoming place for new users.
This
must
be a priority going forward.Vincent Nacon
Yeah, I can't see this happening. Sorry.
Coffee Pancake
Vincent Nacon heaven forbid we bow to grumpy isolationist oldies who want to exercise superiority and hate everyone under 50.
Vincent Nacon
Coffee Pancake Not the best assumption to make. I don't really care for the age thing. It's more often that I see people celebrate their rez-days than complaining about being too young.

My preference is to make the date an option in preferences......I can't think of anyone who would be annoyed then.......smiles.....
