Identification of Animations
tracked
Dana Marques
I have been to a few music venues that use dance-pads and the animations are just very smooth and I really, really would like to know a way to identify where to purchase them. The Animation Explorer does show the animation and where it comes from, but it does not give any information that would help seeking its real origin.
I suspect that it may be to avoid IP infringements somehow. However, I initially think that if just creator name and animation name and/or description were available, it could help those who want to get the product without really putting the creator's work in jeopardy.

I hugely support this as it would also help identify unwanted animations.
Currently if you grant somebody animation permissions and they wear the item as a HUD they'll have your anim perms indefinitely which allows for griefing. By granting users the ability to read more information about current playing animations it would take the guesswork out of whom's accountable.

Moo Boo Great point! I also have suffered from that. LOL

Two ways you can try:
#1: Right click the dance pad or dance ball, select Edit, then Contents tab. Usually the animations will be there (in some cases they would work by UUID and this wouldn't work). Then you can right click each animation, select Properties, and see the creator's name, select Profile. If they are still in business, you can probably find their stores on their profiles. Also look at the creator's name on the ball/pad itself as well, so you can check out the entire product at their store. If you buy the dance ball/pad itself, you can extract animations from it and put them into a modifiable dance HUD, play from inventory, etc.
#2: Ask the owner of the device. They are usually very friendly and helpful people at those places so they won't mind, and they sure know where they got those things.

AlettaMondragon Resident This is really good advice, and awesome guidance to some who wants something in the meanwhile. But, for full disclosure... here' s my experience.
First thing I tried was your #2. Unfortunately, in my specific situation, it was not possible because the owner wasn't available (I sincerely think the "owner" is just an alt so the actual owner don't get a ton of grief?).
After I posted here, I actually thought of your #1.... but... still...when I checked, they had (really!) about 100 or so animations stored, and from different vendors. So, very difficult to identify that dance you love. I say this because I did try to find and, in fact, I did buy some of them. But I still hope that, some day, the Animation Explorer will help me with that, making it easier. ;-)

Dana Marques I think I shouldn't try to give advice when I just woke up! I didn't think this through at the time.
Especially since most people switch the default animations to others in those machines it's not as easy as I've suggested, that you would just find the machine's creator and that store and it's done. And of course you can't play the animation from the object's inventory if it's not your object. If you turn on Developer > Avatar > Animation Info on Firestorm, it will show your currently playing animations... but if you don't own the animation, it will show by UUID, not by name, and animations cannot be accessed by UUID. So it doesn't help.
I upvoted your request because there's really no workaround for this and it would be a very useful feature. :)

Hello, and thank you for your feature request regarding the identification of animations. This is a great idea that could certainly help residents find and purchase animations they enjoy. Interestingly, another resident brought up a similar suggestion in the past, and we are merging your comments to get to it faster. We have no estimate when it may be implemented, but please keep an eye on future updates. We appreciate your input and hope you continue to share your ideas to help improve Second Life. Thank you!

SL Feedback Interesting. I did search for "animations" to try to find a similar idea but I couldn't. Thanks for merging, then.

Dana Marques it was probably suggested on the old JIRA system and so is in their internal tracking system (that's what the "tracked" status is -- this feedback is now in the internal system). Your post helps to show this is an ongoing issue.
