Integration of Bluesky into the viewers
tracked
jackiewallace Resident
A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, Second Life residents could post pictures directly from the viewer to Twitter. However, since then, Twitter has evolved, and this feature has been removed from viewers. The transformation of social media has also led to changes on Flickr, where adult or sensitive content can no longer be shared, prompting many users to abandon the platform. Considering Bluesky's rapid and dynamic growth, along with the challenges surrounding Meta and X, it might be worth exploring the possibility of integrating picture sharing with Bluesky. What makes you think Bluesky won't change it's policy and API in a couple years like all the other platforms did? Waste of development time. We should be building features that last. It is possible to share to third party services without viewer integration.

I think more users would like integration to Prim feed.

In the present polarized situation with regard to social media, whatever SL provides access links to will be condemned by some. If I was in charge I'd (with regret) remove them all. I do, as it happens, have strong political opinions but they don't carry over into SL.

Oriella Charik Would a decentralized social platform (such as Mastodon or Nostr) be a better choice in your opinion?
Janet Rossini
Bluesky is corporate owned and is therefore a tool of the oppressor. It is likely to go the way of Twitter. I would advise finding some places whose ownership is more federated. Mastodon and the like. Federated equivalents to YouTube and Flickr and such are coming into being. Perhaps attention should be put there.

Janet Rossini I like the Mastodon and Nostr too, but at this moment much more people are using the Bluesky.

why bluesky, why not primfeed
jackiewallace Resident
Rizzy Khaos If someone asks me about Primfeed, I usually advise them not to use it, and I have legal arguments to support this. The Primfeed social media platform specifically targets the Second Life user community, whereas other social platforms are much more widely known because they are designed for a general audience rather than a niche community.

Bluesky is a one-way-street echo chamber where only one side of the discussion is ever given a voice. Since this does not reflect the diversity of thought and opinions of the Second Life Community I think a place such a Primfeed would be much better suited for such things.

Kuva Nishi
jackiewallace Resident If there are issues with Primfeed, then perhaps that's not the best choice either. So far I've not heard of anything bad about it, but I don't dispute that you may know something I do not. I would just argue that Bluesky should not be the only option.
jackiewallace Resident
Kuva Nishi The ideal scenario would be for the Second Life feed to fully replace these platforms in every aspect.
I chose Bluesky because I currently see solutions in this platform that users can utilize without restrictions. Fundamentally, Mastodon and Nostr would also be suitable, but due to their popularity and the compatibility issues I personally experienced with Nostr, I ranked them behind Bluesky.
I’m not considering X, as it has been in decline since Elon Musk took over. As for Facebook, my security concerns prevent me from supporting it in order to protect the residents of Second Life.
As far as I know, on Flickr, only users with a subscription can share adult content, whereas DeviantArt has no such restriction. Overall, my ranking is as follows: Bluesky - DeviantArt - Mastodon - Nostr.

Adding integration into all the third-party social media sites is a maintenance nightmare. At least we can just save images to disk and upload them ourselves (also allows you to take several and pick out the best one).
jackiewallace Resident
RestrainedRaptor Resident You're right, but I try to think like a regular user who wants to share pictures as easily, simply, and quickly as possible. I would be the happiest if Second Life had a feed connected to profiles that meets today's user needs.

You have no problem with the LGBTQIA community, but you don't like it when a queer person suggests that places where the government doesn't target and discriminate against said community are better suited to the needs of a platform largely dependent on this community's creativity. Note taken.
jackiewallace Resident
Mona Eberhardt I understand that the future of LGBTQIA communities is important to you, but this topic has no relevance to the technical development suggestion/request I made here regarding Bluesky.
Mona Eberhardt
jackiewallace Resident it has everything to do with how LL ends up being able to run this place. And with not throwing a big part of the user base under the bus.
Mona Eberhardt
Seconded. Also, Second Life not only needs to integrate BlueSky, it needs to integrate Mastodon as well. Furthermore, we need a statement by LL that it will go out of its way to protect the vibrant and strong LGBTQIA community of Second Life. In fact, perhaps they'll also need to move their base of operations to Ireland or Belgium.
jackiewallace Resident
Mona Eberhardt I use Mastodon, but the Second Life community is less active there. As for the LGBTQIA communities, this has nothing to do with the technological development of Second Life. Let’s not go overboard. I have no problem with LGBTQIA communities; everyone’s sexual identity and privacy should be respected. However, I think that the statement made by a member of the LGBTQIA community, which seeks to interfere with the internal operations of a business ("need to move their base of operations to Ireland or Belgium"), is a bit of an overreach in my opinion.

Bluesky is flavour of the month , but there's also Mastodon and many other possible platforms that may leap into popularity..
I suggest thinking about a mechanism (plugin?) in the viewer allowing posting to a whole range of social media platforms, provided some third party writes the required code for each one.
jackiewallace Resident
Bavid Dailey Technically the platforms are using different APIs, so you can create a UI to sharing datas to other social media platforms too, but they are using "different language" for accepting your sharings.
Bavid Dailey
jackiewallace ResidentWhich is why I am suggesting that the viewer have a plugin capability .... different plugins for all the various platgforms and APIs.
