New User Onboarding for the "shorts" - future SL users.
Charlotte Bartlett
Really just a list of what if ideas, should LL feel interesting to review as they consider user growth and opportunities based on a external discussion unrelated to SL.
Personalised Instant Entry (Zero Friction) - (And why I like Project Zero/App dev and where it could go).
First 30 seconds:
“Pick Your Vibe”
Ask ONE quick question: "What excites you the most?"
Exploring Virtual Worlds
Roleplaying
Fashion and creating an Avatar
Architecture and Interior Design
Travelling by Land, Sea and Air
Earning Money
Creating
Socializing & Hanging Out
[The over 18's stuff]
etc etc
This lands them immediately in a theme, with pre-made avatar & environment, eliminating the "nothing" of 30 seconds.
After they answer, and are in their themed journey:
Use a guided AI NPC (voice & chat)
"Welcome to Second Life! You chose [Theme]. Let's get you set up in 10 seconds!"
[Fits to the AI Companions]
Instant Gratification Rewards
First Reward Unlocks Instantly: As soon as they click to do something, they receive a free item or currency.
Example: "Boom! 500L$ just for starting—let’s use it!"
Use Haptic Feedback (mobile) & Sound FX to reinforce the reward dopamine hit LOL
Next 30 Minutes:
Engagement & Retention
Objective: Keep them entertained, engaged, and socially invested.
Gamified Onboarding (Micro-Tasks & Challenges)
Instead of dumping them into a complex world, give structured, engaging mini-challenges:
5-Second Wins:
Change your outfit → Unlock a TikTok-style filter effect for your selfies of your avatar on PrimFeed.
Say Hi in chat → Get instant positive feedback
Etc Etc
Fast-Track Socialisation:
Auto-match them with a buddy or mentor (gamified AI NPC or real person) based on on sign up info including time zone.
Quick “First Friend” Challenge → Meet someone else and earn exclusive item/swag
Get them linked into a embedded PrimFeed platform use to posts their selfies and short videos too (Tik-Tok style) (Embedded means its operable in window in SL not a link to the website to be immersive).
Let them build their preferred style profile on PrimFeed quickly so they can see what other users are posting. Recommend their first five follows, and have a LL account and those who auto follow back.
Pop up screen within Project Zero/Viewer/App.
Build out badges, groups, saves, shorts on PrimFeed (I know that's Luke's platform but hint LL)
Content Feed & Trending Zones
Users expect bite-sized, visually engaging content.
Fix and build “Trending Now” areas where they jump directly into viral Second Life experiences.
Expandout Prim Feed to be interactive, and they treat as their shorts, reels, finding content, followers and following (it's the social glue)
Curate exerenices. Moles host monthly sailing regattas or community source with building classes from leaning tower etc, horse riding ranches with daily ride outs - tour guides through the hallowed ground of the over 18's areas, Or keep to Moles for ease initially so less overhead. Residents who host get a discount on their tier or plus accounts whilst an active host to reward them.
Loops via Instant Achievements
Mini-Leveling System: "You just hit Level 2 in Style my finding how to adjust your shape! Here's your reward!" (they figured out how to detach Charlotte's house they put on their bottom)

Timed Mystery Rewards: Every 10 minutes for the first hour, they get a free randomized reward and linden dollars if they keep playing and interacting..

Some random comments....
- it feels very youth oriented: social media, instant gratification, and so on. Would probably appeal to the young, but be very off-putting to older folk. Is that what we want?
- engagement is a great idea. However I don't recommend anything involving money rewards as that willbe gamed (I know this from experience; people will make an endless stream of alts even for rewards as small as 50L).
- I strongly disagree with anything involving AI. Firstly, AI will generate absolute garbage answers (AI hallucinations are becoming well known by now). Secondly, it makes SL lesspersonal. So, real people instead.
- Remember that introverts will be driven away if they are forced to be social. Allow for the entire thing to be done alone. (I'm the sort who will leave a shop if employees insist on helping me.)

We already have a lot of these features in-world on Social Island, which used to be the starting area for Second Life a number of years ago. It even gives you some simulated "L$" as a reward for completing certain tutorial tasks, which you can then "spend" on little items in a shopping area. There is a "leveling" system in that it keeps track of what step you're on in the tutorial and tries to encourage you to complete the next task. I'm not saying this in a "we tried that and shouldn't try it again" way, but more in the way that there are already examples
still in-world
that we can learn from.I spend a lot of my time focused on the new user experience, specifically for SL Mobile, and of course there are a lot of improvements that can be made. I think an important part of the new user experience that has literally no answer at all right now is how to deal with non-English-speaking new residents. Especially on mobile there are a
ton
of them, and currently the mobile app doesn't have any localization, much less a starting tutorial in Spanish or Portuguese. My translator gets a real workout in the starting area.I think the idea of specialized experiences to match a person's interests is great, but who is going to build them, and who is going to keep them updated? Social Island, for example, was a monumental effort to construct a more comprehensive new user experience but it was eventually abandonded, I can only assume because it was feeling a bit dated with the information it presented. This may seem like an elementary question, "Of course LL will do it", but their resources are limited and stretched already.
In any case, yes, I do agree that more of those resources should be focused on the new user experience! Talking about what should be done is useful and critical to prevent wasted effort, but I also think it's important for us to try to contribute something ourselves to the task as residents, whether that's spending time helping new people, building helpful experiences for them, or something else. We can all do our part. :)

I think this is all pretty frenetic, but I like the idea of a more organized, guided intro to the world with immediate feedback. I do think one of the keys to retention is getting folks hooked up with communities: new member help groups, and also groups based on activities and interests. There are always people who will be fine exploring on their own, but for most folks, hooking into communities is key.

Lots of suggestions = good. I may not be behind each and every idea myself but from what I gather, the current tutorial areas are not well aligned with the mobile app and and the browser new resident experiences so in finding or building new ones (or encouraging gateway communities to do so), some of these suggestions may be very useful. Upvote for residents making thoughtful and considered suggestions.

Thank you for using the translation: to facilitate the adoption of the unexpected treasure that Second Life represents in view of the self-enhancement that its technology allows (and for having tried for years myself to facilitate access to it for new users in front of my distance learning offer for example) I can tell you two things: 1° take into account by observation what is REALLY lacking (not necessarily adrenaline or games) 2° to answer this need through AI; The 2nd is not in my skills but the 1° a little bit: I would say that those who came and stayed in SL are the ones who knew how to wander for a while on their own without getting discouraged. It is a minority, I am not teaching that to anyone. How do you reach others who don't have this appetite? It seems to me that their biggest obstacle is to feel reassured about their competence as a user. They need guidance that is not from someone watching them. Very gradual and didactic guidance: 1 thing at a time before the next session. For Google Earth, people are less bothered in their navigation because they do not feel their body and therefore their mind involved in the exercise. In SL yes, and that is what is or can be traumatic and overwhelming... So you have to think about technically being able to empty this delicate moment of what affects the majority of beginners. Explain the camera for example that leaves the body of the avatar and allows so many things... Start with what involves the least amount of emotions. It's up to you to play the Linden! Never give up the maximum use of the avatar which is one of the most empowering inventions for humans ever seen since the invention of writing... My respects.

No free linden ty. We already have so many that the market is crashing and everyone is increasing prices
Linn Darkwatch
Purr Waifu Well, this was originally written in Feb. when the SL market wasn't so bad. But free clothes or useful items could be good.

I'm not sure about the leveling system or the limited-time drops, but the rest is spot on. Nicely done!
Charlotte Bartlett
Cain Maven Limited drop of a house on them... wait that will do the opposite ha ;)
Cain Maven
Charlotte Bartlett Wait. Are you saying that my houses are a reason for people
not
to stay in SL? :)Persephone Emerald
Charlotte Bartlett, The ability to drop a temp rez house on someone else might be appreciate even more. 😁

I love it

This seems really hard to set up inworld. Also, the 30 minute thing/limited drop thing would be awful.
Gorgeous Aurelia
PrimFeed bans anything AI from the public gallery, so having "tik-tok style filters" already eliminates a lot of people. Bad idea. I like most of your list here, but the heavy integration into a 3rd party platform like PrimFeed is pointless.
Monamaldita Resident
Gorgeous Aurelia They don't prohibit it, you just need to mark that you are using AI. There are plenty of AI on the main page, especially in stores, they are just marked as such.
gigimonetx Resident
Gorgeous Aurelia Incorrect. Next time try leading with positivity instead of negativity. Articulating that something is pointless when you are leading with misinformation, is problematic.
Gorgeous Aurelia
gigimonetx Resident k. Read the primfeed rules yourself.
Charlemagne Allen
Gorgeous AureliaAlso, Primfeed is a third party service. How would it work with the lab?
Graeme Eton
gigimonetx Resident Primfeed allows commercial AI content -- marked as AI content -- in the public gallery. Private users posting their own content cannot post AI content in the public gallery. Per their TOS: "Altered or generated content
The Public Gallery feed is reserved for Second Life™ content. Therefore, any media generated or altered using generative AI or the "morph" techniques on the main subject of your artistic media is completely forbidden from the Public Gallery, as Primfeed does not consider this type of content to be from Second Life™. The main subject is understood to be the focused content you want to showcase in your media.
External software edits are allowed, but the result must showcase Second Life™ content overall.
Vendor ads generated or altered using generative AI are allowed in the Public Gallery as long as they are labeled as such. See the guidelines regarding vendor ads."
Charlotte Bartlett
Gorgeous Aurelia. That's not correct just we don't misrepresent them. PrimFeed allows Vendor ads generated or altered using generative AI in the Public Gallery as long as they are labeled as such.
Filters (to use one example) like putting love hearts around somebodies head, does not correlate to an "AI generated image" in that sense. Hope that helps clarify the definition on my list off the top of my head and what I meant by "filter". We also have some fantastic tools already in some of the viewers that do some amazing photography options and filtering too (not AI).
Embedding the capability to engage, link socially to a mechanism (like PrimFeed) which could be a great idea to focus user to interest then to community. Finding their people is a key thing that keeps people in SL, the friendships and connection and we need to keep users engaged long enough so they "get there". It also, at their fingertips, brings a familiar concept to those not using SL who use Social Media interaction in that general manner.
Hope that helps with the filter explanation and Primfeed suggestion (poor Luke, it's an example, as I wanted to showcase that residents are making amazing strides that can help with new user retention).
I fully expect everybody has MUCH better ideas than my ones to come along with contributions using the above as a spark to inspire their own thoughts on what we CAN do to help user's stick and with their experience.
Charlemagne Allen what what you do instead? (I always love your posts so know you are super creative).
My hope is this is for a new generation of a SL users who can join the platform we love, and if we could "just" retain them sufficiently long enough, They will connect more deeply and we improve on the current situation of approx 1% of new players sticking.
Thanks all for reading my weirdo feedback and ideas :)
