Paid Name Change Privacy Issue

0cienne Resident
when you decide to pay for a name change.... most do it due to a problem with someone abusing them and the name changer wants to be rid of that person. The problem is when changing your name it still notifies all your friends and anyone who keeps your calling card. Why??? It should be a private thing. Why is there not a button to check off if we want to notify our friends or not. That would solve things. I want a button to not have to notify our friends and calling cards.

I am sorry if you are getting harrassed, even after changing your name. However, I disagree with changing your name to hide from people. As suggested, create an alt, or deal with it the normal way - file an abuse report for every unwanted attempt to contact you. You should not be forced to spend money to change your name. Allow the current systems to work by taking advantage of them. I have changed my name a lot, as it's a fun thing I enjoy from time to time. I have never changed my name to hide, however. I wish you the best. PS: A simple script can produce your new SL name in less than two seconds. As a business owner, I use it to keep my customer database up to date, but EVERYTHING is linked to your UUID, not your name.
Paul Hexem
That's not what name changes are for, or we'd be able to bypass most security systems.
Toothless Draegonne
Get an alt if you need privacy. You can prod scripts with an old name and get the current name, and this is intended behaviour that should continue to be a thing unless you want to absolutely break a whole lot of stuff.
Whether the name change should immediately send out a notification, sure I can get behind that. But if you need to hide from a stalker, the mechanism already exists.
nulshift Resident
I don't want people being able to change their name to get off banlists and blocklists. This would allow people to do that.
Aubrey Bloodrose
nulshift Resident this so much
Cuddles Supply
nulshift Resident Pretty sure ban lists are by UUID which doesn't change.
Paul Hexem
Cuddles Supply Which is sort of why this request is redundant. Since UUIDs never change, changing your name for privacy will never work.
Timothy McGregor
Paul Hexem Yes. Particularly true if you have recognizable content out in the world that you made. Once the change fully propagates, your new name is all over it. And yes, any agent/land relationships are by UUIDs on both sides, not display names, user names etc.

nulshift Resident only solution is leave the program.

I'm not taking a position on the privacy/safety/ethics of this issue, but perhaps one option would be to provide a different service that would entirely migrate the account to a different UUID.
Toothless Draegonne
Anastasia HorngoldNote that bans, group memberships and access lists across the grid, literally everything including references to the old UUID would need porting to the new UUID, which would probably include scripts that might or might not be some "stalker HUD", and an automated system is going to have incredible difficulty knowing which is what.
Allegory Malaprop
Anastasia Horngold At that point, you need to get a new account. Changing UUID should never be an option, that just straight up breaks everything. It's a privacy nightmare, it's a support nightmare, it's a security nightmare. There needs to be an unchanging unique identifier for an account for more reasons than I can count- if you don't want that, you need an entirely new account.
AlettaMondragon Resident
Anastasia Horngold I think this should have been something for LL to figure out before launching SL. 23 years later, having everything built around the avatar UUID from identification to all forms of communication, it is just too late.

If someone is going to stalk someone a name change isn’t going to stop them. I am just saying. I don’t condone it. I don’t approve of it. I had a falling out with a friend who was a DJ who I blocked who DJ and my friend when to a set at a place we showed up as she was finishing she accused me of stalking no name change needed.
I’m just saying. People are gonna do it or accuse you of it.
Ruby Starlight
I’d argue there are more people who change their names with the intent to stalk people and trick people than there are those who think changing their name is going to help them get away from psychos. I mean let’s be real, even if you could change your UUID, you’re still going to tell your friends who you are. And if you think none of them will EVER betray you and share that info, you haven’t been in Second Life for very long. You’re never going to escape weirdos and creeps and jerks in Second Life. If you’re suffering at the hands of harassment then report them or start a whole new avatar and make new friends or just leave SL. Changing your name and not your social circle will help nothing, even if the change can’t be tracked.
AlettaMondragon Resident
Ruby Starlight I was thinking the same, if anyone could change their name and UUID as well or in any way get a "new identity" that cannot be tracked, the stalkers could take advantage of it too. They can use alts anyway, but I do notice that some people approach me, or I have to approach them, and they act like we don't know each other, and if I had no notes on their profile or their calling card or their SLURL from a past interaction, I would never know they changed their name. That is quite inconvenient even if they don't do it on purpose, while I have the same name so they will know who I am.
AlettaMondragon Resident
While it might look like a witness protection program at first sight, the ability to change your name is actually just a vanity feature so you can have a last name, or drop it if you don't like your ancient last name, or you can come up with all kinds of new names you like, and of course it's good business for LL. It has nothing to do with protection.
Saz Ninetails
Being able to reinvent yourself and hide your former name completely would be a nightmare for those being stalked. I know people on their 4th or 5th go round on new avatars as they had to start over due to their own mistakes. If you want to be rid of someone just block them. Keep blocking alts they will eventually give up. Do AR if they are that bad, repeat doing AR every time they send abuse.
Wicked Nightfall
With the level of abuse that occurs on Second Life between members this should be an option. Change of name along with UUID. People are terribly cruel out there.
Lucifera Morningstar
Wicked Nightfall As LL will tell you, changing the UUID is an absolute non-starter. They need one piece of data that doesn't change so THEY can keep track of what you own (so it shows up in your inventory when you look) and what L$ you have, etc. The only reason we got a name change service at all is because they moved everything to be based on UUID. Also, changing UUID would mean people could evade block lists, ban lists, security orbs, etc. Never going to happen, guarantee
Wicked Nightfall
Lucifera Morningstar You're 100% correct. Shame there isn't a way that it could be done and still keep all processes intact.
AlettaMondragon Resident
Wicked Nightfall And they lurk in the shadows. It's quite spooky.
Wicked Nightfall
AlettaMondragon Resident Who lurks in your shadows? I imagine there is a solution for that, no?
You have yourself a great night, kiddo.
AlettaMondragon Resident
Wicked Nightfall That was a wicked reply! I'll remember it at nightfall!
Wicked Nightfall
AlettaMondragon Resident I also once had the name 'Astro Nebula' so have fun with that one.. Can't wait for your next reply. Happy to be remembered as much as I should be forgotten.
PS. It was just Shadow - not Shadows - Spooky Shadow and his sidekick Grimm. Fun times.
AlettaMondragon Resident
Wicked Nightfall I intended this as some kind of fun, not to expose your previous names. That's exactly why I wrote "shadows", but oh well.
Wicked Nightfall
AlettaMondragon Resident if that is what you want to go with - we sure can. I always enjoy the theories that are out there about me.
Sometimes a name change is to get away from bad people and sometimes it is just for securing a cool last name - like Shadow or Nightfall. Hard to say no at a low price of only $14.95 for lifetime use.
I also have Nebula and Darkheart. I have a fun collection of last names and SL gets a bit more money to keep going - it's a win-win
I would imagine a last name would even look good on you too. There are some good ones coming up for Halloween.
AlettaMondragon Resident
Wicked Nightfall I'm not that scary actually. Quite a few people told me I should have been Aletta Salty, though.
Wicked Nightfall
AlettaMondragon Resident Obsessed seems more accurate - let's end this interaction, please. I don't know you nor want to enable more of this
AlettaMondragon Resident
Wicked Nightfall As you wish. I only saw that last reply of yours now. Not sure how you mean "enable any more of this", though. The purpose of this feedback forum is to enable conversation, ideas, suggestions between residents and Linden Lab. It is as much a community building platform as it is a tool to report bugs and request new features or changes that can improve Second Life.
Wicked Nightfall
AlettaMondragon Resident Can we get a Linden in here - I keep telling this person to stop harassing me and it keeps continuing.
AlettaMondragon Resident
Wicked Nightfall I am sorry you feel that way. I hope your day will get better. :)
Wicked Nightfall
AlettaMondragon Resident Again Can we please have someone moderate here - for weeks I have been dealing with her harrassment and her doxxing my previous name - this is abuse and harassment.
She/he represents the real issue on SL - people like Aletta - who are ruthless in their harassment. Just stop replying to me. You have done enough in this interaction - I change my names for my reasons not for you to come out and think you are revealing them to everyone - what if I was doing it for safety reasons - what if someone made threats against my life - well here comes Aletta putting my life in danger again.
What we need to do is remove these horrible drama filled people from SL so we can actually enjoy our time on SL. I can't block this person here and have had to deal with weeks of her incessant harassment. I cannot even put in my support for a new feature cause Aletta took it upon herself to harass me for weeks.
Can we please remove her. Even in her last statement - I hope your day gets better - which is gaslighting that some how it is my fault that this happened. Not that she can't stop replying to me or bothering me anywhere in the feedbacks or that she doxxxed my past names - but that I was having a bad day. NO. IT IS YOU AND ALL YOU. YOU ARE THE GUILTY ONE HERE. Leave me alone, please.
AlettaMondragon Resident
Okay, let's get a few things straight here.
1: This is a public feedback forum, not IMs.
2: I kept this conversation polite and respectful, you didn't.
3: My comment did not affect your show of support to this suggestion, and I have made other comments about the suggestion too, so this - "I cannot even put in my support for a new feature cause Aletta took it upon herself to harass me for weeks." - makes no sense. All of us can. That is the whole point.
4: This was going on 5 days ago for a while, and then I only saw your last comment today that you made 5 days ago. Not for weeks, and I even forgot who you were in those 5 days.
5: I did not expose any of your names. You did that, and even told me a custom last name would look good on me.
6: I really wished your day would get better. I still do.
