Parcel setting to make outside invisible
tracked
Amie Blossom
A parcel setting that would derender all objects and avatars outside of the parcel boundary.
I believe this setting would be welcomed by many particularly on mainland parcels. It would be entirely optional to use but would make mainland parcels a more viable option for every resident.
I also believe a side effect of a setting like this would be to "clean up" mainland in general, reduce the use of ugly privacy screens, inappropriate skyboxes as ground level etc as the need for them would be lessened.
This setting would also improve performance within parcel boundaries due to lower render load and not require residents to manually adjust draw distance to improve performance.
This setting would be entirely optional and disabled by default.

I definately would "upvote" this feature request. It would be a very useful feature and increase efficiency for builders, class presenters and many others.

If this were implemented, I think there needs to be a way for others to override the setting. For example, if I'm flying a plane over a large parcel... I could suddenly find myself heading straight for a skybox or other obstruction once I cross the boundary. If I could override this setting, I'd have more time to avoid the collision.
There's already something akin to this in world. The draw distance of ban lines has been reduced (and can be overridden, thankfully). A ban line suddenly in your face is a nasty surprise. I'd even argue there should be a setting to increase the draw distance so you can slow down to navigate with more care. Like the ban lines, having objects suddenly load and rez with little warning could be frustrating to some users.

I think a similar idea to this has already been proposed in the shape of culling volumes, which would be much more flexible and allow for performance improvements in busy areas.
Amie Blossom
Toothless Draegonne That is a very good idea. If it can work for water it could work for anything surely? only slight issue I can see with it is that the tools available make it quite tricky to make volumes that would work for all parcel shapes which are not necessarily right angled/rectangular.

This definitely needs to be a setting that has several options including direction, adjacent parcels &/or meters, altitude, whether to view neighboring land or just water (or nothing at all) and probably some other things that havent been mentioned yet. But on mainland, at least, it should be able to be personally disabled by any resident in their viewer so they can have a contiguous viewing experience if they wish. I dont see this as a way to have Adult activity in G and M sims. Its hard enough to control what minors can see & do without throwing this into the mix. If there is a market for more Adult land, it should be added in the Zindra area.

If this is to be put out, I do feel maybe should not be done on ground level, and stick more to sky areas
Most times sky areas around a parcel will not be connected to things around it, but be on its own build (such as skyboxes)
On land area I feel should be open, the mainland is already sort of suffering with cases private areas that break the whole idea of the mainland that what makes mainland spasial, I got a LL home really was hopping to find a community there, but mostly everyone is locked in there homes and never talk or communicate with anyone else around, at least where I am
The main land is a place you get to drive and see things all around, is part of what makes it fantastic, even that I guess osme take it mostly just as its cheaper and not for the mainland part of it
I think something like this, even if the outhers will be able to see the builds in a diffrent sims dose harm some level of what mainland is about, for private sims maybe this be more relvent over all

I have given some more thought to this proposal and find I am less enthusiastic than I was.
I rent a mainland parcel and have sea access on the south; a neighbour to the north who has partially completed builds in the sky which looks like a junkyard to be honest; a vacant rental parcel to the west and neighbour who built something behind high stone walls to the east.
I rezzed a high blank wall on all but the south borders, and put art and gadgets there. The walls are transparent from the outside, and phantom.
I chose the parcel for the sea access and view - which explains why I previously strongly said I'd want directional control at the "make the outside invisible'.
But even with that I foresee problems with this proposal. WHat would I see instead? the terrain but nothing else? grey cloud? These are hardly reasons for me to take my wall down.
I think this question is the achilles heel of this proposal .....

Also an option to make the parcel content invisible to outside the parcel

VriSeriphim Resident Totally disagree with this. if you need that sort of isolation get an island. Or, run your own open source server. There's no point in joining a community pou don't wish to be part of ...

Title: Preference to make outside invisible
Details: In this proposal: https://feedback.secondlife.com/feature-requests/p/parcel-setting-to-make-outside-invisible
The OP suggests adding a parcel setting that makes everything outside the parcel invisible, which I think is a great idea.
Additionally, what about allowing this as a personal preference?
As a user, I can currently limit the draw distance to see fewer objects at long range to avoid lag. But what I really need is the ability to see all the content of the parcel I’m in, and none of the adjacent parcels content — not only to reduce lag, but also to avoid seeing inappropriate or private content from neighbors.
In short, I’d like to propose an option in the viewer to render only the objects within the parcel I’m standing on, improving both FPS and overall experience.
