PBR Clothing Friendly Default Windlight Day/Cycle Settings

Some designers are starting to release some really beautiful clothes with PBR textures but I've been seeing some really weird effects.. Some materials come out SUPER shiny and reflective and even washed out, especially things like satin and leather textures. I've tried some of the available PBR windlights from marketplace and they seem to make a big difference, but I usually walk around either in Midday or "use shared environments" and the results are super unpredictable. So, I have ways of making sure things I wear look right to me, but I'm assuming most everyone else walking around sees the weird reflections. Are their any plans to make the default vewer windlight settings more compatible with PBR textures so everyone can see them correctly?

Yes I totally agree with this one, currently Midday (not legacy) makes alot of PBR clothing especially leather very blue and washed out.

This is already a thing, its the Midday (not legacy) preset. As for shared environment theres not much LL can do since its up to the land owner to change those. I dont think LL should go around and changing peoples land settings for them to some type of default.
Also this not just a PBR thing. Even with the legacy BP you can have it look drastically different between environments. I know this because I was having this problem long before "PBR Viewer" ever came along.

We definitely need this.

I find a similar unpredictable effect with the old texture system if I have set the specular high on a clothes item. I do it sometimes on purpose to get the iridescent effect of specific types of cloth. I find that a way to control it so its not going too crazy in different windlight settings is to tint that specular quite dark when I color it for the iridescence effect. I don't know if PBR works the same way, probably not - but this might tie into the requests for tintable ORM maps?

I've made a lot of shiny PBR clothing since starting last February with Firestorm Alpha. I try to educate potential customers (LOTS of info on my Flickr) to expect surprises as they go from place to place, because PBR is totally dependent on the environment. For me, it's part of the fun in wearing them!
But when I make anything new (that is, not a PBR version of a garment I made before), I always make two versions--both with and without the PBR material. If the wearer goes to a place where the PBR just doesn't work, it's very easy to just replace the PBR dress with the other one. (The PBR version has the same backup texture as the other version of the garment.) Creators of furniture and buildings don't have to make 2 versions (what they make stays put), but should be putting an attractive backup texture for those without PBR viewers.
PBR has brought SL up to the level of many other 3D online platforms. After always hearing people complain about how behind SL is (deserved or not), I would think the leap to PBR would be welcomed. That does NOT mean it was launched the right way (last June was really a disaster), but it truly has opened up a whole new level of creativity for designers/builders and realism for everyone.

Very good points Maggie. I feel LL should also add some kind of support for users who can't or don't want to use PBR viewers for some reason. This should have been planned for before PBR was released. I bet there are many users who cannot use PBR viewers because they are too demanding on their hardware or otherwise prohibitive. It does not seem fair to essentially force users to accept a form of graphics support that is not critical, such as something security related, when it is clear that it will cause heartache for a large part of the community. I have a highend graphics card (not getting into details to avoid creating new side discussions), but have had serious problems since PBR was released. I've been trying to work with the Firestorm team (health permitting) and using LL's viewer is not an option because they don't officially support Linux and I prefer Firestorm. The problems with PBR have been worked on and performamce somewhat better, but to me for the trouble it is not worth it and I have stayed with the most recent FS version which does not support PBR, being hopeful soon it will be much better. I am sure I am not alone, and as discussed this causes issues for users wanting to use garments with PBR.

Hello, and thank you for your feature request regarding PBR clothing-friendly default Windlight day/cycle settings. This idea has been brought up in the past and is currently tracked. We understand the importance of having consistent and visually appealing environments for PBR textures, especially for designers and store owners. While we have no estimate when it may be implemented, please keep an eye on future updates. We appreciate your input and hope you continue to share your ideas to help improve Second Life. Thank you!

SL Feedback What would REALLY help is some information for building owners on how to internally light their structures after enclosing them in Reflection Probes, cutting them off from the Environment lighting. Normal lit prims don't light PBR clothes at all; there has to be something special (which seems to be very hard to find and/or figure out).
Added Jan 28: I think I found the answer, which is that how much a PBR material will be illuminated by artificial lighting depends on how shiny it is. Material that has the metallic feature will reflect nearly all the light back without absorbing any; meaning it's going to stay dark. What WILL illuminate it is light-colored walls, floors or other large objects nearby. More experiments to come!
