Request to remove birthday, or option to hide it, from profile.

I like to have the privacy of keeping me age confidential. Just like in RL. Age should not matter. I think I speak for many.

There are MANY who are male in RL but choose to be Female in SL. And vice versa. Therefore, gender isn't shown. Same with age. Some of us don't want to show this. Fair enough, perhaps not a complete removal. But it would be nice to have the option to hide it if we want.

age doesn't matter, thats just an idea ... don't talk for others, they have their own voice.
primerib1 Resident
Strong disagree.
Many communities have a policy of accepting members whose avatars area "at least X months old". And these communities' groups are not Public groups; potential new members need to submit a filled application form.
The motivation for this policy is several-fold: (1) Make sure it's not a griefer / bot account, (2) Make sure the potential member knows what they are going to participate in, (3) Make sure they have 'longevity' in SL, and not join-and-never-appear-again.
Hiding avatar's age makes this policy very hard to implement.

not a bad idea tbh. as long as its optional.
so everyone is happy

You don't speak for me.
Lacie Nolan
Really think removing that is just a waste of time that they could actually be implementing other things that actually make a difference. This effects no real life anything, and actually kinda like my age will be showing 20 years old soon.
Fiver Hellershanks
Lacie Nolan, as I said in the subject, "OPTION TO...", I am not asking to remove entirely. Age, gender, location... these shouldn't matter in the profile, so why the need to show?
Lacie Nolan
What gender? What location? Not sure what your profile looks like, but that is not in mine.
Fiver Hellershanks
Lacie Nolan, just saying.... Like gender and location, I think account age is not necessary in the profile.
Lacie Nolan
That may be your opinion, but mine is I kinda like my age showing, I'm coming up on 20 years old. Sadly there isn't to many of us around that age. Think there is more pro's to showing your age, then the couple cons you have mentioned.
Sadly your comment about "I think I speak for many" didn't really happen, only 4 other people voted for this, majority of us do not want it.
But apparently doesn't matter now, its tracked, and probably take years to come in effect.
Fiver Hellershanks
Lacie Nolan I speak for many whom are not here, I don't speak for ALL. As much as I don't know how many, you don't know how many do either. To each their own. And I am asking for an OPTION. I hope you understand what "OPTION" means.
Lacie Nolan
Fiver Hellershanks Now you are just sounding petty and insulting.
Like I said before, its tracked, why you even keeping this going?
Anyways, I'm done with this post.

I understand where the request is coming from. However, hiding the SL birthday may serve as protection for mischievous alts, griefers, and scammers.
Ebirin Resident
Shamonne Resident I always had the reverse issue with a new account. There are always predatory people trying to go for new accounts, especially to sexually harass them.
Shamonne Resident
Ebirin Resident I hear you. I had the same as a newbie. That's why I also support the suggestion to have the option to hide SL birthday.

Fiver Hellershanks I've read your original message via the emailed notification. You do not need to use profanity just to get your point across. To each their own, you said it yourself, so do not hate individuals for being individuals.

If I may be so bold as to weigh in on this matter:
I fear that the idea of hiding ones' account creation date is something that should not be done nor suggested. There are i near-infinitude of bots and griefers who make one-off, same-day accounts with the sole purpose of flooding areas or evading bans. Currently many areas have age bans to prevent such behavior (alongside bans based on payment information on file and used, etc.).
In addition to preventing such groups from entering areas, the use of the account age information also serves a secondary purpose - to protect YOU against a land owner or property holder arbitrarily banning you for not having such, or by claiming you to be an age you are not and thus making the assumption you are a bot, etc. To this, you can effectively point to your account age (whether to the land owner / administrator, or, should the dispute go further, to a Linden Labs employee)
Thirdly, to be fair - the information does not in any way reflect real-world information nor compromise actual privacy. It is assumed that someone joining Second Life is already at or above their local age of majority, thus people begin with the assumption, right or wrong, that you (the account holder/user) are 18 or so years of age at minimum, and possibly older. With the length of a normal human life span, this places you reasonably between 18 and 85 at start, a span which is as reasonable as IRL guessing someone's age from their typing.
Fiver Hellershanks
Rheia Silvercloud. I think the age of an account, just like Payment info use, can be set by land owners in the parcel accessibility. However, is it necessary to show in the profile itself? If gender and location isn't something necessary to show in one's profile, why should age be? The request here is strictly for an option to show or not, not a complete removal.
primerib1 Resident
Fiver Hellershanks In my community, we welcome even new accounts that wanted to visit and take a look around our sims. Because we're proud of what we have built.
HOWEVER, we limit the membership to our community to only accounts X months old. So making this age information not visible is problematic as we can't easily determine their avatar's age to accept/reject their application.
primerib1 Resident
Fiver Hellershanks Now about "gender" and "location" ...
"Gender" in SL is fluid. One can have avatars of different genders. So displaying that in the profile is useless.
"Location" is necessary to prevent stalkers. Or people that -- for one reason of another -- has a grudge against someone and keeps chasing that someone over many sims (yeah, there
are
psychopaths like that). Even if you block them, they can still make one's experience very miserable by sabotaging whatever roleplay you're having. And that potentially makes others uncomfortable."an option to show or not, not a complete removal" ... then what's stopping someone making a HUD that can query the SL back-end for someone's age? Which means that hiding the age in the profile is practically useless if the reason is "privacy purpose". And as I had posted before, there
are
valid reasons for Communities to want to know one's avatar age.Alwin Alcott
I wonder how a account age can be a privacy concern .. it leads to zero rl information.
Fiver Hellershanks
Alwin Alcott, since it leads to zero RL information, so why should it be necessary to show? Again, I am asking for the OPTION TO. Not asking to remove entirely for everyone. I think one should be given the option to reveal AGE on their own and not something that is mandatory.
primerib1 Resident
Fiver Hellershanks Because some communities restrict members only to "avatars that are X months old". And to apply, a potential member must submit a filled application form. Having the avatar age information public and not hideable is essential to implement this policy.
Fiver Hellershanks
primerib1 Resident So for those who don't show age and applying for your group membership, you can just reject , right? Again, this is an option for those who does not want their age to show.
primerib1 Resident
Fiver Hellershanks More code = more possibility for things to go buggy.
Since there is nothing actually related to "privacy concern", then why not discard away with the option at all, reducing the amount of code, and preventing possible bugs in the future.
SL Feedback
Hello, and thank you for your feature request regarding the option to remove or hide the birthday from profiles. This is indeed an important privacy concern for many residents. We wanted to let you know that another resident brought up a similar request in the past (BUG-234256) in Second Life's previous bug tracking system. We are merging your comments with the existing issue to help us address it more efficiently. While we don't have an estimate on when this might be implemented, please keep an eye on future updates. We appreciate your input and hope you continue to share your ideas to help improve Second Life. Thank you!
primerib1 Resident
SL Feedback Strong Disagree. I don't see how showing the avatar's birthday become a privacy concern.
Fiver Hellershanks
primerib1 Resident Because it is a personal choice. Might not be yours. But it is for some others.
primerib1 Resident
Fiver Hellershanks Not everything needs to be a choice. Some things can NOT be made into a choice if by doing so degrades the experience for a lot of people.
