Creating RV Life in Second Life
Xiu Crisp
I would like to suggest that Second Life PLUS or higher memberships should have an alternative to static housing locations. I would like to see Linden Labs establish RV Parks and make it possible for PLUS or higher memberships to have a temporary spot in an RV Park and drive the Linden Road System and see many places.
Obviously, this means mobile home RVs, like the large ones you see on the road. maybe something like the Benz ones with the box on the back.
Being able to reserve a spot would be nice. Having a max duration would prevent people from squatting at the best locations, but this could be a way for Linden Labs to reduce the constant turnover of Linden Homes.
And create some fun activities like collecting Park "stamps" or travel "badges".

This could go along with the existing request to turn abandoned land into a forest, and my own ideas on creating a resident-assisted National Park. Create a linden homes-type continent, where anybody can choose to donate their tier instead of having a LH or Mainland tier. This would grant them the right to have a presence of some number of land impact, be it via RVs, moonshine shack, tent, boat house, whatever, within the national park.
No permanent structures below 2000 or 3000m, no ban lines or orbs, just a massive blob of land where anybody donating to it gets managed rez rights, possibly using Casperlet or a similar system. Include a designated combat area so people can have fun with their pewpews. Maybe a couple of rail tracks and dirt tracks connected to the mainland proper.

While i like the idea in general, its still a waste of Linden Labs ressources for several reasons.
- There is already RV Life: get a camper themed LH
- Moving between parcel already exists by abandoning the current LH and getting a new one
- Reserving already exists for Premium+ members using the ticket system
-(almost) no one is physically driving/travelling anywhere because:
-- a big chunk of SLs population is here for lewd activities
-- another big junk is dressing up, shopping, clubbing
-- another smaller junk is creative, building, running a business or club
-- and a very tiny minority is sailing, flying grid driving and GTFO-ing
--- I live around blake sea for manyyy years and i spend quite a lot ot time inworld. If you see boats passing by, either in Sailors Cove, 2nd norway or around Nautilus, its often the same people over and over again.
Even less people fly, Angels AP, Holly AP, etc are either empty or have just a few souls. The only buzzing place is Sirens Isle - for "show off" reasons like "look how nice i can dance on the deck of my sail boat i drove here without even the sails raised" or the typical 800 prim BBX monster motor yacht from 2015.
If you have a look at GTFO boards youll notice its always the same few names doing all the hauls.
And last but not least, the worst ever - driving a vehicle over Linden Roads.
There is a reason why almost no one does it, except the brave grid drivers - its an awful driving experience.
TL/DR
I love the idea, but i can see why LL might give 1000 other ideas and wishes a higher priority
P.S.
Almost forgot about the Linden Railway system all around the LH continents. Its nice to see the tracks and stations, but when was the last time i saw someone riding on?

Speaking for myself, one of the big reasons I don't bother flying around the madlands, are the psycho crazies and the sociopaths with griefer orbs who think it's okay to fire off SAMs at anything and anyone flying over, regard the natural propensity to explore land that isn't specifically blocked by way of parcel ban lines, as some kind of home invasion scenario, and refuse to use existing parcel access management because "ugly yellow lines :(((((" that can be disabled in the viewer.
Faced with that kind of environment, who beyond a determined few would even want to attempt to navigate the madlands? Getting teleported home at random every 5 minutes is just not very fun.

Considering that Linden Homes are pretty tight on prims as it is, the idea of 'downsizing' into an RV that can be parked wherever there's a spot available would be lovely. Not only would the prim limit make more sense since there's, you know, less living space, but there's a bigger social aspect - right now Glory Road has two, maaaybe three others present when I visit my home? (the last time it was a crew of Moles keeping the street tidy.) It would also open up the Road system to more usage, people would be able to meet each other more organically than by visiting shops or venues held in common, and so on.
The only problem I would potentially see is Home Location being updated. A static home can be landmarked and set as one's rez point easily, a mobile home or vehicle is a more 'interesting' exercise. Would the RV need to perform these tasks when parked, both updating the owner's rez point and sending a landmark? or would it need to pop a reminder dialog instead? Not sure if LSL or the new SLua languages can handle this.
And yes there would need to be logistics for allowing object entry/semi-permanent rez for such "roamers" without allowing griefers to exploit those same permissions. The RV's themselves might need to be whitelisted for designated parcels (and have functions to put out awnings/grills/seating that are actually linked to the vehicle rather than rezzed in situ) so that there's not an issue with people rezzing 'stuff' cos they can park an RV and leave it there.

Every once in a while, Drivers of SL has a social event where people bring an RV or trailer to a campground and spend the weekend. Cheerleaders of SL, which operates Cheerport and a vehicle business, often gives out something like a small house trailer to participants.
There are some campgrounds on mainland:
- http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Adelara%20Lake/233/160/22 is L$75/night, for example.
So this is available now, on a small scale.

Sounds like a fun idea that would build communities

As an Estate Manager I'd be happy to set aside a small plot or two for RVs, with as noted a time limit for users. Another way of attracting permanent renters!

Aye, as a big fan of RVs I'd happily support this one! Wonderful idea

I like it!

You could do the same with houseboat docks and driveable houseboat/barges/yachts

Cute idea!
