Map API failures: coords -> region name, region name ->coords
tracked
KarlRichard Resident
The API to convert coordinates to region name and reverse doesn't work anymore. The server's answer always is "Invalid Capability ID."
Try these example URLs from the wiki:
If the API runs with PHP, maybe this malfunction began with yesterday's PHP update, or the PHP version had been changed? Since yesterday in the early morning it still worked.

maps.secondlife.com grid coordinate to name lookup broken

Visit maps.secondlife.com open the browser console and observe the errors about invalid capabilities when clicking the map, also observe the missing popup to teleport to the clicked location.
It seems both the name->position and position->name lookup capabilities were recently removed, presumably as part of php2shell mitigation efforts (I was also using those in a map rendering tool for cruises)?

Maps.secondlife.com Clickiness Broken
AlettaMondragon Resident
At https://maps.secondlife.com/ normally you can click on any map tile and it will place a pin with the region's name and the pin's SLURL enclosed in a Teleport button. Since Wednesday, October 21, you can only place pins on the map from the Destination Guide sidebar or if you use a known SLURL to open the map. If you click anywhere else, nothing happens.
This breaks functionality in interactive maps that use maps.secondlife.com since clicking on those maps does nothing now either.
I tested this with different devices and browsers, placing pins by clicking on map tiles fails consistently with Firefox, Edge and Chrome.

The functionality loss might very well be the result of this:
"PHP released their open-source software patch

. Additional software vendors may also publish patches once they are available. It’s imperative to closely monitor these updates."Christina Riederer
I've been suddenly getting the same error message on all my landmark teleporters since today Entering coordinates for Demo Area
OperatorIM error. No operatorMAP API Error. Data returned=Invalid Capability ID.
Status=200
KarlRichard Resident
Maestro Linden Btw, the error message shows up with HTTP status 200, which is misleading. If it showed an error code like 500 it could be far easier handled in LSL scripts since the status code is a parameter in the http_response event.

SL Map website not working properly, regions usually display names and a Teleport? request when clicked, but aren't now :(

I've also just discovered this issue and was wondering if it might be related to the PHP situation (I wasn't sure when it was last working)
This is also affecting the official Second Life Maps website - the popup that normally appears when clicking a point on the map, showing the region name and a Teleport button, is no longer appearing at all as it also uses one of these URLs to fetch the name of the region that was clicked on.

Eddy Ofarrel Maestro Linden I can confirm this. I just tried the SL map website with firefox browser. When I click on the map, no popup shows up. In the developer console these error messages show up:

KarlRichard Resident thanks for the report and context that things were working yesterday.
I also see failures when querying the 2 MapAPI capabilities described in https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Linden_Lab_Official:Map_API_Reference :
% curl 'https://cap.secondlife.com/cap/0/b713fe80-283b-4585-af4d-a3b7d9a32492?var=region&grid_x=1000&grid_y=1000'
Invalid Capability ID.

Invalid Capability ID.

Maestro Linden Confirming that the API broke some time during the European evening yesterday. I ran a few queries and while i can’t pinpoint the exact time it tipped somewhere in the vicinity of 19 CET

Maestro Linden When the issue is going to be fixed, please regard this suggestion to slightly improve the API: https://feedback.secondlife.com/feature-requests/p/improvement-of-the-sl-map-api

Jessica Hultcrantz Maestro Linden I suspect that it somehow is connected to the PHP update fixing the serious php2shell security issue, which would fit in that timeframe, depending on when the api server has been updated. (assumed that it runs on PHP)
Jessica Hultcrantz
KarlRichard Resident Sounds perfectly valid, but fixed versions and patches are out since long. Any system should be able to be updated and put back in service by now.
However I would expect the capability server facing the internet to be a real patchwork as it previously has been documented as fragile and slow (somewhere on the forums) so it might take some time to get back into shape.
Any kind of confirmation on the matter from the Lab is welcome, it’s not the first time it breaks.

Jessica Hultcrantz That's correct, the official patches are out there for PHP versions 8.2 and newer. However, if the API still ran on an older version they might have upgraded to a recent one, which could make the php.ini be overwritten plus some former deprecated commands might not work anymore.

I think we all (that knows PHP programming at least) knows the pain/work involved at large version upgrades.
