Fix Forum Display Names
complete
Extrude Ragu
The forum has a new integration that lets you have your SL display name instead of your user name.
However, it has been implemented incorrectly. It is adding 'Resident' to display names without a second name.
Example:
My Second Life Displayname is "Ai"
My Second Life Username is "extrude.ragu"
Expected:
The forum would display either "Ai" or "extrude.ragu"
Actual:
The forum is displaying "Ai Resident" which is misleading because it looks like a username. My display name does not have "Resident" in it

This was not an intentional change. We corrected it last Friday, along with some other fixes that are not apparent to users.

So, since someone decided to cave in and revert the change over a vocal minority...
Are you Lindens now going to go through and make further reverts to other, non trivial changes that have needed your attention?
If not then perhaps you ought to.

Two potential fix suggestions ...

I'm not even sure why this was thought to be a good idea :( Should have left things the way they were!

Kylie Jaxxon All I can say is with all of the other tickets (bug fixes, tasks, stories, epics etc) in the JIRA backlog at LL, this is the one a dev picked up?

Additionally this opens up two abuse situations on the forums.
1) If I were to change my in world name to one of a popular forum poster such as Rowan Amore, Madeline Masters, Pheebykatz etc, that's what's now going to show up on the forum. Since in world display names are NOT unique, I could take on the identity on the forums of anyone I wanted to. I change my forum avatar and voila, two Rowan Amore's posting. And unless you look at the post counts (4K vs 18K) you would not know who is who.
2) I change my in world display name to something explicitly sexual. Since LL does not even have the resources to remove hard core porn images (including some RL illegal images) from group descriptions let alone profiles (which are by ToS supposed to be PG rated), I can't see how they'd have any staffing resources to police the names that are appearing in the forums. Now, on the forums, that sexually explicit name appears as my name.
This at
best
should be optional for users in their setting .. show display names or registered account names. I'm Katherine Heartsong but partnered to Greg Cleanslate in world (an 18 year old last name). I changed my display name in world to Kat Cleanslate to indicate that partnership. But my forum name I still want to read Katherine Heartsong, since my business (Heartsong Gallery) is directly connected to my account's last name.It seems like this was not UX tested at all. Please, allow us settings to choose which one appears on the forums or simply roll it back and do some UX research with results posted before making a change that affects a user's most personal thing ... their identity.

New forum-name thing makes those of us who use the exact name we signed up for SL with look like total thrash by stapling "Resident" to it all of the sudden. It's an abomination committed against those of us who are not part of the first and last name cult. Not a fan. 0 stars.
Kyrie Deka
Yup! Me too!
My "Display Name" entry has been just a 1-word nickname "Key" for many years now. This new authorization process which I completed for the first time ever yesterday 3/4/26, added "Resident" as a 2nd word, changing my old forum name Kyrie Deka to "Key Resident". So in my case pretty innocuous when displayed in a public forum. But some "Display Names" inworld I have seen are, well, let's call them more dramatic...
Knowing that some users post in the forums without being inworld and some post while also working elsewhere, there is therefore the possibility one might post and not be able to edit their suddenly-shown "Display Name" quickly.
And so to me this seems to potentially have broad impact and risk, and hoping for a priority to fix it ref: public-facing forum.
Please consider:

Thank you for letting us know! I have passed this information on to the development team for investigation.
Rowan Amore
Lettie Linden. It should, in my opinion, show both display AND legacy name. Anyone could choose to use my name as a display name which would confuse things quite a lot.
Katherine Heartsong
Rowan Amore I am so gonna change my name to yours. Then I'll be cool :)
