For quick understanding, I've condensed the longer form of this request into two bullet point lists. Further explanation is under the --- dashes.
The request:
  • A Marketplace dashboard giving shop owners access to keyword-level performance data, including which search terms are actually driving views and sales for their products, and ideally would also give:
- Visibility into sale source: Whether a purchase came from an on-Marketplace search or an external link (blog post, social media ad, etc.)
- Click-through rate data: How many people click a product after seeing it in search results
Why it would help:
  • Creators could tailor product descriptions and tags to real search behaviour, reducing reliance on black-hat SEO tactics like keyword spamming
  • Customers would get more relevant search results, since accurate tagging cuts down on products cluttering irrelevant searches
  • Linden Lab would gain clearer data for revenue projections based on search volume
  • Linden Lab could use the data to improve the Marketplace itself: Better semantic search, keyword clarity, and moderation against mistagged items
  • Linden Lab could also use modern, standard e-commerce functionality as a selling point to attract new users to Second Life
---
When it comes to understanding keyword performance, where users come from for sales, and even the click-through rate (how often someone clicks on a product after seeing it in the search) for products listed on the marketplace, there is no good measurement through the marketplace itself.
The closest to a dashboard function we have is the Top Selling Products and Top Searched Products reports, which do not provide extra data besides what I can assume for the latter to be views in all searches for said products. While it would technically be possible to manually calculate a click-through rate, this would take a lot of time and manual processing.
Meanwhile, other digital e-commerce platforms provide this data as standard, as well as often including further information about where those customers came from (e.g. on-platform searches or external links).
Coming from a digital marketing background, where Google Analytics and Google Search Console, alongside in-house dashboards from Shopify and Amazon, provide these details and more, I have seen first-hand the value this adds to a brand when it comes to targeting a specific audience, reaching wider ranges of potential customers, and building brand awareness.
I understand that this would be an undertaking for Linden Lab. However, the creators are a driving force behind the Second Life economy, and giving us tools to better parse and understand what is doing well and what isn't would be inherently useful and mutually beneficial for the customers, for the creators, and for Linden Lab alike.
Having this data would mean brands would be able to understand how customers search for products better, be able to include those keywords in a useful and meaningful way in their product descriptions and product tags, and would be empowered to use less black-hat SEO methods (e.g. keyword spamming, incorrect keywords) for effective reach.
This in turn would improve the customer experience on the marketplace, which is often a negative experience thanks to incorrect keyword tagging resulting in items showing in irrelevant searches.
Then, this would assist Linden Lab in three ways:
  1. Giving clearer data into what users are looking for on the marketplace, allowing for better revenue projection based on search volumes, etc.
  2. Allow for better monitoring and improvements to the marketplace, e.g. improving keyword clarity, implementing proper semantic search, preventing customer exhaustion and irritation through proper moderation and action against incorrectly tagged items.
  3. Using this functionality as a recruitment method to draw in new users for Second Life, as it would better align with modern business standards on a digital economy and e-commerce platform.
For clarity: I am not asking for a method to promote black hat SEO practises (e.g. using irrelevant keywords to show on incorrect searches, backlink abuse to rank higher into searches, etc.).
I am asking for Linden Lab to provide a marketplace dashboard that gives shop owners the ability to know what terms are performing best for their products on a keyword basis, the ability to see if a sale was made via a marketplace search or arrived from an external one (e.g. a blogpost, or social media advertising), and how many people click through to an item once it is seen on the marketplace search.
As link posting does not work here, I would advise Linden Lab and others to look at demonstrations of how Google Search Console and Analytics works, as well as other e-commerce platforms.
Finally: I have checked through the merchant center and have not found anything that would give this level of functionality. However, if it does exist, then I would love to be referred to it.
